Today's Photograph . . . . Grand Canon North Rim (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 145:3
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. (ESV)

Thoughts
The chilly morning air nipped at my nose. A frosty cloud percolated from my mouth with every breath. The air temperature overnight had dropped into the low thirties and most of the men in our hiking troop were not prepared for a frozen wonderland when they signed up for a late summer excursion.

It was 6:00 am, on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Time to get up and descend into the great abyss for an unbelievable adventure. But the heat of the sleeping bag would not release me from its grip and I did not resist. After a few minutes of soaking up its warmth, my thoughts drifted towards the sights and sounds that this day would bring. Restless, I attempted to unzip and free myself from my captor. Its powerful spell had created the unexpected struggle.

The emotional security of staying in my current surroundings was intoxicating and extremely difficult to let go, but the risk-reward quotient of hiking the Grand Canyon outweighed any desire to stay in a place of comfort and miss out on being part of a great adventure.
(Michael T)

Action Point
Religion is often complicit in creating a lifestyle that leads an individual's faith into a spiritual rut. We do things because we have always done them or because we are afraid of change. Sometimes we resist out of fear or because of our self-righteousness.

Christianity on the other hand can free us in a way that allows us to see the enormity of God and the possibilities of growing our faith. God has called each of us to a life adventure of worship and service. He wants to stretch us and to move us into a position that leads us to lean on Him.

Don't give in to the comfort of normalcy. It only leads to spiritual complacency.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Wear a stocking cap to stay warm when you find yourself in a sleeping bag during cold weather.

Today's Photograph . . . . Turkeys In The Wild  (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Matthew 6:25
"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (ESV)

Thoughts
Too many times when we get involved in an outdoor activity we feel the need to have the latest accessories, clothing and top-notch equipment. Somehow we convince ourselves that we must have this particular item or gadget in order to be successful.

I've shot deer in casual dress and I've fished with hotdogs and even pulled in a few whoppers. I've also done both with all of the gear of the professionals.

Which times were most rewarding?
(Michael T)

Action Point
Hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities are not about the gear or fancy equipment. It's about the hunt and it's about the time spent with your fishing partner or your group of friends.

God wants our daily lives to be about the heart. It is not about the "bling" or other earthly fads that quickly fade away. He wants us to put our faith and trust in Him. He takes care of the birds and the flowers, how much more does He care about us? He will provide, protect and sustain.

He knows that LIFE is more than the things of this world; He just wants us to know it too. Be smart with your money and time, your family will love you for it.

Sportsmen's Tip of The Day
Just for fun, the next time you have a big hunt or fishing expedition go simple. Be creative and have some fun with it. Who knows, you may even stumble onto the next "must have secret."

Today's Photograph . . . . Let Them Do What They're Trained To Do   (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
I Corinthians 16:13-14
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love. (NIV)

Thoughts
There may come a time on a hunt where you have to follow the commands of this verse. When? When you observe someone violating a game law, such as:
  • Shooting more than his limit of birds.
  • Shooting two deer and trying to sneak them out.
  • Sneaking an animal home without tagging it so he can hunt and kill another one later.
These are all violations of game laws. What should you do? Get whatever pertinent information is available and call the game department of the state where you're hunting to report the violation.
(Cliff S)

Action Point
Similarly, as Christians, we must be vigilant, watching for Satan's attacks against us. We must be on our guard, stand firm in our faith, and be strong--men of courage!!! It's what God expects of us, and what He's equipped us to be.

When the attacks come, report them to God, He'll take care of the violator!!!

The Bible tells us to stand, or to stand and be strong for our God. Trust Him. He'll provide all that you need to stand firm in your faith. Read His Word. Pray at all times. Put on His armor. Stand!!! Read Ephesians 6.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Do not confront a game law violator. Call the appropriate authorities and let them do what they're trained to do. Do be a good witness by getting as much information as possible to help the officer do his job.

Today's Photograph . . . . So That People Are Without Excuse   (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 46:10
He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."  (NIV)

Thoughts
We hunters have a common disease, embellishment! Yes, those tall tales just get taller with each telling--the forked horn muley buck becomes a mighty four-pointer; the 200- point whitetail somehow gains an extra hundred pounds.

God, too, tells a story. He's telling it in the magnificence of every mountain and every animal He has made. And, there's no need for embellishment. Just be still and observe the magnificence of the creation around you, and you'll see Him everywhere you look. He's in the majesty of the mountains and the beauty of a deer. Romans 1:20 says, "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-His eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse," (NIV).

Yes, God is exalted among the nations, and it's no tall tale!!!
(Cliff S)

Action Point
When you go to the mountains, plan some quiet time alone to reflect on God's creation. It's magnificent!!!

Abraham Lincoln once said, "I never behold them (the heavens filled with stars) that I do not feel I am looking in the face of God. I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God."

I think Mr. Lincoln had it right!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When you're hunting, spend more time sitting still, watching, and less time moving about. You're likely to see more game, and they're less likely to see you if you're still and well camouflaged.

Today's Photograph . . . . Wild Huckleberries (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
John 15:4
Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the Vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. (NIV)

Thoughts
God created us and the animals we pursue to be fruitful. Deer have fawns; elk have calves; and birds have babies.

It's a simple fact--the fruit will resemble the parent. Our fruit will bear God's resemblance and characteristics because we are attached to Him. Notice the words, "Remain in me, as I also remain in you."

It's a physiological fact that a branch must be attached to the vine, not only to bear fruit, but also to stay alive. Life sustaining nutrients flow from the roots through the vine to the branch, and thereby allow the branch to produce fruit-- fruit that is consistent with the vine.
(Cliff S)

Action Point
We're all branches. To what vine are we attached? There are many from which we might choose: work, family, hobbies, idols, and God.

Make your selection. But, always remember that you will bear fruit of whatever vine is providing the nutrients.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Be careful of the fruit and berries you pick and eat in the woods. Some are safe, some are not. Unless you know for certain, it's better to be cautious than to make a mistake and get sick, or worse, be seriously poisoned.

Today's Photograph . . . . You Too Will Be Rewarded   (NPS)
Bible Study Verses
Philippians 2:12-13
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God Who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.  (NIV)

Thoughts
One morning on a muzzleloader deer hunt, two friends and I discovered the track of what promised to be a toad of a muley.

When he dropped into a deep narrow canyon, Randy stayed on his track while Jeff and I skirted around the top for a shot at this buck that would surely spook when he caught Randy's scent. We crept at least 100 yards along the edge of the canyon and waited while Randy hotly pursued the buck into the head of the canyon. Within minutes we heard a clatter of hooves right beneath us as this monster escaped from under a palo verde tree and scrambled straight up the opposite side of the canyon.

I settled in with my TC Renegade and shooting stick, an ancient saguaro skeleton spine, and readied for the shot that I guessed was at least 125 yards (later 'ranged' at 165 yards).

Jeff whispered, "Are you gonna shoot?"

I replied, "When he gets to the top, he's gonna stop."

Sure enough when that big buck topped out on the other side of the canyon, he stopped and looked back for a glimpse of what had spooked him from his noontime nap. That's when I lowered the boom on him.
(Ruben C)

Action Point
This particular scenario had never presented itself. I wasn't certain that buck would stop. By faith I believed he would, because my Dad had encouraged me to wait for such opportunities when dealing with a spooked buck. With just my old man's advice ringing in the back of my mind, I waited for the shot. He was right!

Paul told the Philippians don't just obey when I'm around to watch (like anyone would when you're in church), but as well when I'm not. We are called to be Christ like each day of the week, not just on Sunday while in the midst of the pastor and the body of believers.

It is not easy. If we are to win others to Christ, we must set the example and walk as Jesus did. I John 2:6 instructs, "Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did," (NIV). Like I was eventually rewarded with that buck, you too will be rewarded with winning others to Christ. His blood can save us all!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Don't know why they do it, but they do more often than not. A mule deer buck will stop at the top of a ridge and look back if you've spooked him and he doesn't know what "you" are. Save this for the running shot that you're not all that warm and fuzzy about or as a lesson for young hunters. Worst case scenario if you don't take a chance on an "iffy" running shot, you'll have an opportunity on the other side of the hill at a buck that's settled down. If you're patient and give him enough time, he will.

July 4, 2012

Today's Photograph . . . .
God  Bless  America   (MQ)
Happy   July   4th !!!

Bible Study Verse
Romans 12:10-11
As to brotherly love, kindly affectioned towards one another: as to honour, each taking the lead in paying it to the other: as to diligent zealousness, not slothful; in spirit fervent; serving the Lord. (Darby Translation)

Thoughts
Today is the day we Americans celebrate our costly freedom. Each and every family has lost precious family members who have fought and died for our heritage and our freedom. In honor I say "THANK YOU" to those who gave their lives, those who have served, and those who are serving in the United States armed forces. What an honor it is to be an American and to be blessed with our freedoms that are in jeopardy.

The privilege of hunting is one freedom that we never thought might be taken from us without our consent. It is a current threat here in America. In my family, we eat what we hunt. In these slim times, we thank God for the food and the health to seek it. The money we spend for a hunting license and the tag goes to wildlife conservation. Before this was in place, many a deer died from starvation from a severe winter and a lack of food. This is a cruel death.
(JQ)

Action Point
Many have given their lives to protect and to preserve our freedom. One life is so precious and the highest price to pay. Our military serve with the right spirit. Today take the lead by sincerely voicing appreciation, shaking hands, and saying "THANK YOU" to anyone who has served or are serving in the military.

Remember, Jesus Christ paid the price for our eternal freedom with His life. Then in His infinite wisdom, He lives within our hearts and walks us through this life to Heaven. He will never leave you, forsake you, and has promised to always love you while meeting your every need. What an awesome win, win freedom. You have one requirement. You have to ask Him to forgive you for your sins and accept His free gift of salvation.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Buy 2 more gallon jugs of water than you need and keep them in your vehicle to hand out. There is always someone broke down beside the road in the summer months. Give one jug to them for their car's radiator and give the second to them to quench their thirst.

Today's Photograph . . . . We Can't Instruct, Counsel or Advise Without A Basic Understanding (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Romans 15:14
I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.  (NIV)

Thoughts
Ever been called on in class, at work, or among peers to step up and demonstrate a skill that others assume you know?

"Go ahead there, Ruben, and demonstrate to these young nimrods the two-shot method for sighting in a rifle."

You stand there stammering a little, because you're supposed to know it; but you're unsure of yourself. You can shoot pretty straight yourself, but you're not so sure you can explain to others exactly how it's done.
(Ruben C)

Action Point
Competent biblical teaching is based on two things according to this scripture: being filled with goodness, and complete in knowledge. We can't instruct, counsel or advise without a basic understanding of the biblical concepts involved in helping one another spiritually. This is why we must be thoroughly grounded in the Word!

Men, teaching others the important points of Christianity is certainly no less important than teaching them the finer points about outdoor sports.

It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built u. Read Ephesians 4:11-14.

Making disciples is our job too, not just that of our pastors. Don't forget: Our time spent in worship and Sunday school is to glorify God first and foremost. But then, use what you've learned to do, as Jesus did as well--make disciples. This also glorifies our Father!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
So...do you know the two-shot method of sighting in your rifle? Basically, you'll need a very solid rest/vise. Bore sight first, and then fire your first round at 25 yards. Realign your crosshairs with the bull's eye. Without moving your rifle (it doesn't work if it moves at this point), dial your scope knobs so the cross hairs line up with your last bullet hole + ½" elevation. Now fire your second round at 100 yards. All things being equal, it should generally impact about 3"- 4" high at 100 yards with most modern calibers. Truth be told, I've used this method over the years and can fine tune my rifle by the third round. It won't win you any medals at Camp Perry, but it does a good job on sighting in a hunting rifle. Now use the rest of your box of ammo for practice!

Today's Photograph . . . .  It Rises At One End Of The Earth . . .  (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Psalms 19:1-6
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.  (NIV)

Thoughts
Have you ever thought about what God looks like? The Old Testament gives a couple descriptions:
  • A consuming fire  -  "To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain," Exodus 24:17 (NIV)
  • A cloud   -  "Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle,"  Exodus 40: 34 (NIV).
A better description of what He looks like is given through words describing His attributes in nature and the world around us. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. . . In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes it circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat."
(Tom B)

Action Point
What do you think God looks like?

I see God in every sunrise, whether I'm in a boat or standing hip deep in the surf. In a tree stand or in a duck blind, he's there.

Watch the early morning sky reflecting an orange glow on the eastern horizon. Slowly it becomes brighter. Darkness changes into illumination as shafts of light emanate out onto the whole earth. Warmth and brightness increase. Tree leaves and flowers petals lift upward praising our Lord, God.

He is the same every day, never changing. Nothing is too difficult or impossible for Him. Praise and trust Him today like you never have before. He will not disappoint.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Illuminate the darkness. If you are a night fishing devotee, check out your favorite sporting goods outlet. Take a look at the different varieties of LED lighting accessories. The small lights can be stuck on a hat, pocket, or lapel giving out a surprising amount of light. No more juggling a flashlight and fishing equipment at the same time.

Today's Photograph . . . . Lyon and Coulson Fly Reel 1940s (Ron M)
Bible Study Verse
James 1:22-25
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it-they will be blessed in what they do.  (NIV)

Thoughts
Men are bad at thinking that we know how to do everything. We don't need to ask anybody for instructions. I'm guilty of this at times.

Take for example, you buy a new fishing reel and it comes with a detailed instruction booklet on all the parts and what to service regularly. "I don't need that," you say, and it ends up in the trash. Six months to a year later you take the reel apart to service it and can't figure out how one pesky spring goes back into the side plate. Where's the instruction book?

Another example, you're meeting a friend at a certain marina on the lake for an early morning fishing trip. "Do you need instructions on how to get there?" he asks. "Nah, I can find it okay." Thirty minutes late and you can't find the marina.
(Tom B)

Action Point
God has given us an instruction book, the Bible. It lists everything we need to know for our lives. It even has sections on what to check if something isn't working right in our lives. "Nah, I don't need it; I can figure it out."

Ten years from now, your kids don't respect you, your personal finances are a mess, or your health is failing. The list might be long or short. It doesn't have to be 10 years later, it could be tomorrow.

Where's the instruction book? Maybe I should have read the instruction book earlier. It's never too late to begin to follow God's Word.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Keep those instruction and parts books that come with everything you purchase. No matter whether it's a sporting goods item or something around the house, set up a file. Eventually you will need the help they provide. Also, don't forget to send in the warranty and registration cards.

Today's Photograph . . . . Mom Will Be Back (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Hebrews 5:13-14
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (NIV)

Thoughts
The renewing of Spring: Buffalo calves are first to arrive in my area; not long after, the elk, deer, and antelope start giving birth to their young.

Those babies depend on their mother for nourishing milk and for protection from predators. As they mature they will rely less on their mother's milk and start to enjoy the food God has provided for them. They will become fleet of foot, able to avoid potential predators.
(Ron T)

Action Point
When I first became a believer in Jesus Christ, I was like a baby in my understanding. I think back to that time--amazing how much I did not know. Through time in God's word, fellowship with other Christians, and a good Bible-based church, my maturity level has and is continuing to increase. That's how it works in nature and that's how it works in our Christian walk with God.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Every year I get calls from people saying they have found an orphaned fawn. Sometimes they will even bring the baby to my office. I explain that the mother will often leave her youngster bedded down when she goes off to feed. Please help spread the word: if you or someone you know comes across a fawn alone, just leave it be; mom will be back.

Today's Photograph . . . . Gives The Real Geese A Place To Set Their Wings . . . (NPS)
Bible Study Verses
Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  (NIV)

Thoughts
There is an old joke that asks, "Why is one side of the V formation that geese fly longer than the other side?" A person might come up with some biological or aerodynamic answer; but the punch line is: "There are more geese on the longer side."

That's kind of funny; but there are some interesting facts about geese and their flight patterns. One goose by itself can fly a long way, but studies have shown that a flock of geese can fly 70 percent farther when they work together.

I have watched a lot of geese fly overhead. They constantly honk to each other. I can't prove it, but I think they are encouraging and spurring one another along as they travel such great distances.
(Ron T)

Action Point
Offering encouragement to people can change their whole attitude. With a little encouragement, great deeds can be accomplished. There are some people who have the gift of encouragement from the Holy Spirit, Romans 12:8, so encouragement seems to come easily from them.

However, we can all practice this trait. Just like the geese that work together and encourage one another, we can do the same. Try encouraging someone today; then sit back and watch their eyes light up.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When goose hunting over decoys, place your decoys facing the wind and in a "J" formation.
This gives the real geese a place to set their wings and land.

Today's Photograph . . . . Blue Gill Lake, IA (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Romans 11:36
For everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Amen. (NLT)

Thoughts
The bobber disappeared from sight! It caught me totally asleep. Fortunately, the fish had set the hook itself with the vicious, powerful strike. Even though it was "only" a bluegill, it was an exciting adventure for me.

I marveled at the colors as I hoisted the fish from the water. There was a palette of brilliant colors evident in this one fish. The Artist had done a magnificent job when creating this little fighter! He would also taste really good when properly cleaned and prepared.
(Jack M)

Action Point
This wonderful game fish is a gift from God. It brings Him glory when we truly view it as the gift of God the bluegill really is. It is found in many waters, is a hardy fish, reproduces itself well, a voracious eater as it seems always hungry, and therefore is available for catching most of the time.

Do you give glory to God for this fish? Do you marvel at His wisdom, goodness, and grace because He allows us to enjoy his creatures? Not only are they beautiful to behold, but they are given to us for food.

Someone has suggested that giving glory to God is making Him famous. We do that by telling others that God is the giver of these and all good gifts.  "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, Who does not change like shifting shadows," James 1:17 (NIV). Give Him glory; make Him famous!!! He has made these wondrous creatures for His glory and enables us to enjoy them, and to tell others of Him and His glory.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
An old fashioned and inexpensive cane pole with line, bobber, and hook can make for a memorable and fun day with your kids, grandkids, and family. The enjoyment of a tasty fish fry just adds to the enjoyment and appreciation of God and His goodness!!!

A Daily Study of God's Word for Christian SportsmenJune 27, 2012

Today's Photograph . . . . Padauk Osage Striker (Jackie M)
Bible Study Verse
Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is -His good, pleasing and perfect will. (NIV)

Thoughts
Turkey calls are fun to make and bring satisfaction. Making your call adds to your hunt. I make them for fun, for gifts, and for personal use.

Start with a 4 inch square wood blank. Nip the corners at a 45° angle to save time on the lathe. Various gouges, abrasives, and other tools shape the wood into the desired pot. Check dimensions to ensure the surface will fit. Drill the holes, sand some more, and apply finishes. My maker's mark is applied before the parts are assembled and glued. Tune each call to the particular striker as some work better than others.

After completion, the surface must be conditioned as well as the end of the striker. When all is finished, I use my creation to call in unsuspecting turkeys to the gun. The finished product becomes a treasure to be proud of.
(Jack M).

Action Point
Maybe God is tooling, remaking, or finishing you as I did the call mentioned above. Are you going through some pain right now? Maybe it's a loss, physical pain, emotional agony, mental anguish, or even depression. "Why?" is a common question. Asking this question does not indicate one is unspiritual or lacking in faith, but often accompanies one's struggle to understand.

God is shaping us to be like Jesus. He is remaking us, finishing us, and removing our rough edges. His Word tells us that He chastens every one He loves. "Because the Lord disciplines the one he loves," Hebrews 12:6a (NIV).

If we remain under His discipline and cooperate through the times of pain, hurt, and discipline, we will become more like our Lord. In this world we will then be a better vessel for God to use in His work.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Buy or make quality calls. Think about what you have invested in weapons, clothes, time, travel and everything else to ensure quality hunts. Don't short change yourself by using inferior calls. Get the best you can afford. Most importantly, practice using them till you are consistently proficient.

A Daily Study of God's Word for Christian SportsmenJune 26, 2012

Today's Photograph . . . . Back-Country Line Shack  (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
John 14:23
Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. (NKJV)

Thoughts
Hunting, fishing and quad riding affords the sportsmen opportunities to visit some old back-country line shacks.

I have often wished that I could somehow look back and see how the "old timers" spent their hours at these cabins.

Today, they are still used by sportsmen as hunting camps. I can remember spending a couple of nights in one myself on a deer hunt. The old wood stove did a good job of keeping us warm at night.
(Byron S)

Action Point
When we live with someone we get to know them well, we form a bond or relationship. We are also in constant conversation with each other. Jesus tells us, "If anyone love Me, he will keep My Word; and We will come and make Our home with him." Read it this way (writer's paraphrase):  Each day, spend time in My Word; and set aside time for prayer and reflection.

If you are not already doing so, take His challenge and give this a try. Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to "teach you all things."  Anyone who already does so will attest to the fact that He is true to His Word.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Sportsmen not only make their home in these old line shacks, but rodents do as well. Carry a small bottle of chlorine bleach with you and mix a couple of ounces with water; wet the floor area with this before sweeping. Keep in mind that rodent droppings carry disease like Hanta Virus.

Today's Photograph . . . . Timber Rattle Snake (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Revelation 20:2
He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; (NKJV)

Thoughts
Yesterday, a friend played a joke on me with a rubber rattlesnake, bringing back a flood of memories from years past . . .

My son, 13 at the time, was with me on a quail hunting trip. we were camped out in a remote area with friends. It was my son's first time out carrying a shotgun, my old HR 20-gauge single-shot. We had walked out of camp to hunt a nearby wash where we had heard quail calling. We hadn't gone far when I heard "SNAKE"!!! As I looked over toward my son, I saw him bringing his rifle up from the hip, and at the same time saw a huge rattler raise its head like a cobra ready to strike.

The 20-gauge sounded its report and the snake's head was gone. That night, we ate snake for dinner; and today, the snake's skin adorns a rifle sling.

After this experience was over, I am not sure who was more relieved, my son or myself. What I am glad for is the snake's demise and the protection my son received.

Action Point
That snake experience was scary for my son and me. We both cried when it was all over. There is a snake (serpent) that stalks each of us today. He knows our weak, unprotected selves, and works to strike when our guard is down.

By reading the whole story in our Bible, we find that Jesus has already defeated this "serpent" on the Cross, will soon have that serpent thrown into the pit for a thousand years, and later thrown into the lake of fire.

Our 20-gauge is our ability to call on Jesus for protection and help when we find ourselves under attack. If we ask, He has promised us that He will help us overcome Satan and change our lives.

How awesome it is to know that He is there for us 24/7 with strength beyond our wildest dreams. Don't rely on your own strength. Read the whole story and see for yourself how it ends; then, claim His promises.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When hunting in snake habitat, high-top boots or snake guards can be a good protection against getting bitten. Study up on your first aid for snake bite treatment; know the proper care for a bite. Rattlesnake bites can not only be severe, they can be deadly.

Bible Study Verses
Exodus 20:8-10
"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. (NIV)

Thoughts
It happened to me during a scouting trip for deer. The day had drawn to a close and I was heading home. I decided to stop in a nearby town for a bite to eat. As I approached the intersection, I noticed a man standing on the side of the road with the usual "will work for food sign." This is when I sometimes have a crisis in my compassion. Trying to overcome it, I stopped and asked the man what kind of work he was willing to do. I knew I could not offer him any, since I didn't even live there. I figured if I received a legitimate offer of landscaping, roofing, etc., I would give him some money.

Although fairly young and apparently healthy, he informed me that in fact he was not willing to work and was just there to get money from passersby.

Action Point
I have been a Christian for some time and thought that I knew a little about the Bible. But, do you ever have one of those days when someone reads a verse to you that you have read a million times before and suddenly it has a whole new meaning!

That happened to me with the above mentioned scripture. Reading it since I was a child, I always heard the command, "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy." It never dawned on me that it also said, "Six days you shall do all your work." This is commanding not only that I keep the Sabbath holy, but that I also work six days a week. I do not believe this to mean that I have to be in the office or at the fire station six days a week. It includes performing chores around the house, volunteering, etc.

In II Thessalonians 3:10b Paul writes "The one who is unwilling to workshall not eat," (NIV). The important point here is "will not work." It does not include those who cannot work, only those who will not work.

If you like me have a crisis in your compassion, remember what God says. We need to help the many, many people right now that have been laid off from work, are willing, and are able to work, but cannot find it. They probably are not going to be standing on street corners, but are in your church or in your neighborhood.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If unable to remove your entire big game animal from the field on the night you harvest, hang the savable portions in a tree at least fifty yards from the gut pile. These two precautions will help prevent meat loss from predation.

Bible Study Verses
Genesis 27: 5-10
Rebekah was eavesdropping as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. As soon as Esau had gone off to the country to hunt game for his father, Rebekah spoke to her son Jacob. "I just overheard your father talking with your brother, Esau. He said, 'Bring me some game and fix me a hearty meal so that I can eat and bless you with God's blessing before I die.'  "Now, my son, listen to me. Do what I tell you. Go to the flock and get me two young goats. Pick the best; I'll prepare them into a hearty meal, the kind that your father loves. Then you'll take it to your father, he'll eat and bless you before he dies." (Message)

Thoughts
We split up from camp to go javelina hunting. Two of the guys walked out of camp to crest a ridge nearby. I drove a couple miles away where I had seen some fresh sign. No sooner had I gotten to my location when my radio squelched. "We see one! He's bedded down." I hurriedly made it back to my truck and sped back to their location.

Arriving at their spot, they pointed to a black mass beneath a mesquite tree about a mile and a half away. "I saw it walk up and lay down, he hasn't moved since!"

Glassing the area I could definitely see an animal there, but due to the distance I couldn't make much out. We began our stalk which would be closer to three miles to stay down wind, most of the while hiking in a wash and out of eyeshot of the sleeping pig.

At a quarter mile away we climbed out of the wash and began to glass the area. Just in time to see the black mound under the mesquite tree rise from its bed, shoo away some flies with its long tail, moo, and begin chewing its cud. My Minnesota native friend had just been deceived by a cow.

Action Point
Rebekah was attempting to deceive Isaac in order to "help" God along with His promise that He would use Jacob to carry out His plan. Although her intentions may have been well meaning, she still planned to deceive her husband in order to carry out the plan.

Although we may know God's plans, sometimes like Rebekah, we feel we need to assist God because they do not seem to be moving as timely or orderly as we think they should. The old saying, "the ends don't always justify the means," applies here.

Remember, God does not contradict Himself. We should never have to sin in order to fulfill God's plan for us.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Javelina typically travel in herds of 5 to 12. If you see just one, wait. There are likely others in the same area.

Today's Photograph . . . . The Rainbow, God's Promise  (USDA.GOV)
Bible Study Verses
Romans 4:20-21
He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. (NKJV)

Thoughts
The thunderstorms were intense along the squall line as it entered AR. By the time the front had reached my home, it had dropped several tornadoes including one that stayed on the ground for a state record, 123 unbroken miles.

In the aftermath of destruction, homes and lives had been lost. Buildings had been reduced to crumpled piles of rubble, trees were twisted off like match sticks, and people were faced with rebuilding their lives piece by piece.

Yet, as the front moved away and calm began to settle, a rainbow appeared in the sky. In the middle of trials and troubles, there was God's promise.
(Brian H)

Action Point
God never promised us smooth sailing. Life just gets tough sometimes. Jesus says in John 15:18,  "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you," (NKJV).

Sometimes we find ourselves stranded like a ship in a bottle. Try as we might, we can't push through the tough stuff of life. It's in those times that we must eventually come to the end of ourselves, fall on our knees, and simply take God at His word.

I challenge you to find one single promise that God has made that He has not kept. You won't be able to find one. If God says it, you can take it to the bank, as they say. God's precious promises are made to us for our comfort, healing, peace, joy, and correction. In times of trouble, search for God's promises and believe them. He will make a way for you when there seems to be no other way. Friend, take God at His word - never doubt. Believe!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A reflective stick-on dot in the center of your tailgate and another on your camper or trailer will help you align things when backing to hitch up. You can also get mirrors that mount on the trailer that will give you a bird's eye view of the hitch and ball.

Today's Photograph . . . . For HIS  Glory . . .  (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Proverbs 12:27
The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt. (NIV)

Thoughts
The big ten-point stepped quietly out of the woods and began to walk slowly down the field-line. With great caution, he tested the wind and kept his head moving as he watched the open field carefully. Finally, he was broadside, a muzzleloader sounded off, and my brother had his biggest buck to date.
(Brian H)

Action Point
That big buck encounter didn't just happen. You see, I've left out some details in that story. I left out the hours we spent scouting and glassing that field. I didn't tell you about the time spent setting up a stand, clearing shooting lanes, trimming limbs, and figuring out prevailing wind directions. I didn't mention that we worked to figure out how to walk in to that stand so that we would remain undetected. The moral of this story is that it took hard work for this big buck encounter to happen.

The Bible has something to say about laziness as well, look at Proverbs 12:27. Wow!!! That passage paints a great picture for all of us hunters. But, it's a picture that is a metaphor for life.

My paraphrase would go something like this: "Do everything that you do in life to your best ability." Perhaps you wouldn't categorize yourself as lazy, but what about those remarks that goes like this: "For what I'm paid for this job, that's all that I'm going to do." How about this one: "Nobody knows if I finish my paperwork or not. Nobody's checked it, so why bother?"

The correct attitude is that God gave us abilities and we should do everything that we do to the best of OUR ability, but do it for HIS glory. Whether hunting, working, or anything else, you won't roast your game unless you are diligent.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When trimming limbs for shooting lanes, you don't always have a pole saw with you. Try tying a medium weight stick about a foot long to a length of rope. Toss the stick over the offending limb and then pull it down to your reach with the rope. We call that an "Arkansas Lasso." Happy Hunting!!!
