Today's Photograph . . . . Marine Navajo Code Talkers   (Archives.Gov)
Bile Study Verses
I Corinthians 14:33
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (NKJV)

II Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (NKJV)

Thoughts
Missionary son and World War I veteran Phil Johnston authored the Marine Navajo code talkers' communication system. It's success was based upon the complexity of the Navajo language, the alphabet and native origin symbols that did not exist on paper except for an incomplete Navajo dictionary, Navajo had been passed down generation-by-generation verbally, and the tribe had not been infiltrated by German art dealers, students, and anthropologists studying  various tribal dialect.

The participants were from a small geographical reservation within mostly Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah who were highly educated in the English language and possessed first language knowledge of the written and oral Navajo.

Examples of some words used:
  • Hummingbird was a fighter plane.
  • Chicken hawk was a dive bomber.
  • 411 words used for the most frequently repeated letters- E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R, D, L, and U. Letter A could be designated by the words"tse-nihl" or "be-la-sana" meaning "axe" or  "apple" and  "wol-la-chee," meaning "ant".
Marine challenges to overcome were:
  • Combat officers were leery to depend on an order being translated in a language that they themselves had no chance of understanding.
  • Available qualified Navajos.
  • Lack of military terminology in Navajo.
  • Navajos who volunteered through Selective Service were often sent to other branches of the military.
 Benefits of Navajo code talkers:
  • Communication by radio that was both secure and error-free.
  • The one code the Japanese were never able to break- the Navajo Marine Corps. code.
  • All code talkers were excellent general-duty marines.
375 to 420 Navajos served as code talkers returning home without parades or fanfare since they were sworn to secrecy about the existence of the code should it ever have to used again which was resurrected in the Korean and Vietnam wars. "Honoring the Code Talkers Act" became law on December 21, 2000.   Awards of  the Congressional Gold Medal to each of the original 29 Navajo code talkers and the Congressional Silver Medal to each man who later qualified as a code talker.

Sportsmen's Devotional would like to thank the remaining original code talker, Cpl. Chester Nez, for his excellent and  necessary service in saving hundreds if not thousands of lives. Cpl. Nez has also been an avid deer hunter and sportsman. Again thank you Cpl. Nez!!!
(Jo Q)

Action Point
As soldiers for Christ we must remember our God is not the author of confusion. He has given each of us that are walking in His Light a spirit of power, a spirit of  love, and a sound mind.

We could all learn from the Marine Navajo code talkers. They did their job so well in secrecy and humility not striving for human recognition.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A little know fact, some of the largest mule deer in the North America live on the Navajo Reservation. One needs to accompanied by a Navajo guide if you can draw this precious tag. Contact Navajo Fish and Wildlife for more information  at  http://www.navajofishandwildlife.org/.

Today's Photograph . . . . The Lord Your God Is With You Wherever You Go . . . .   (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Joshua 1:9
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (NKJV)
Thoughts
Another teammate of Doris Miller's, the first African-American recipient of the Navy Cross (mentioned yesterday), on the nicknamed WeeVee, the USS West Virginia, was Sylvester Pucci. As a member of the brave ones he remained silent about his quick thinking that saved his ship, his teammates, and their future generations.

The WeeVee started listing at a 28 degree due to her one side ripped open by torpedoes. Captain Mervyn Bennion, later awarded the Medal of Honor, in the last moments of life directed Lt. Claude Ricketts to start counterflooding the ship.

On  battleships all compartments were shut and sealed in a procedure called "set zed." Therefore if an area was damaged, adjacent sections remained water-tight. If one side of the ship became flooded, the other side can be manipulated for balance by counterflooding.

Pucci wisely attacked the hinges and freed the counterflood cranks. The action report notes the sailors ran through the lower decks, opening flood valves in the proper sequence to deter the listing.
WeeVee responded slowly swinging back on its keel to rest upright.

Without targeting the storage door hinges, the ship would have capsized. Pucci utilizing mere seconds ran his race, used his God given intelligence even after the counterflooding started with the ship was listing so badly that most wouldn't have tried thinking it was too late. He is now known as "the Angel sent by history."
(Jo Q)
Action Point
Position is everything we are told and I agree. To follow God's lead, blindly follow Him in faith when circumstances are screaming at me to STOP and FOLLOW WHAT'S WORKED IN THE PAST, obediently trusting Him through following His instruction through His Living Word,  living in Faith, Not Fear, and taking every thought captive to Jesus - You and I Win!!!!
What if Pucci wasn't in the best of moods and hadn't broke the storage door hinges to right his ship? What if he decided to jump his ship early to make sure he survived without a care for his fellow teammates? What if he justified since he wasn't getting paid what he was worth, he wasn't going to put his best foot forward? Scary . . . same reasons we hear why many of us don't share Jesus with our friends and family.
There's no guarantee any of us will see tomorrow, we need to make today count!!!  I still have loved ones - family and many friends that keep postponing their decision on where they will spend eternity. People it's not about what we want. It must be what He wants.

Yes, position is everything. Where does He want you? The safest place to be is in the center of His plan for your life.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Attach a cord from the boat motor mount to your boat plug.  In case it comes loose, it can retained. It's not a bad idea to have a spare plug on board also.

71st    Anniversary   of   Pearl   Harbor

A Date Which Will Live In Infamy
Bible Study Verses
Romans 15:4
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. (NKJV)

Thoughts
Gallup poll just before the attack on Pearl Harbor flaunted that 52% of Americans expected war with Japan, 27% did not expect war, and as always the fence straddlers consisting of 21% had no opinion.

Doris Miller was collecting laundry when the battle commenced. He found his battle station destroyed by torpedoes. His description of his actions was interesting, 1 "It wasn't hard. I just pulled the trigger and she worked fine. I had watched the others with these guns. I guess I fired her for about fifteen minutes. I think I got one of those Jap planes. They were diving pretty close to us." He shot a 50 caliber Browning anti-aircraft machine gun until the ammo ran out and he was ordered to abandon his ship.

Please pray and support our troops. They need to know they are not forgotten while they protect our freedoms and each of us can touch one family.

Today's Photograph . . . . Are YOU Willing To Make An Epic Splash For Jesus Chris   (Michael T)
Bible Study Verses
Matthew 14:28-33
And Peter answered Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him, saying to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"  And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.  And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." (ESV)

Thoughts
During my adolescent years I had always heard adults or parents say, "Would you jump off a bridge just because somebody else did?"  My reply, "Well of course, given the right circumstances."

It's a parent's job to protect their children, but it's a child's job to experience life to the fullest and to make their parents nervous. I know as a child, we loved to play in the woods and we were always ecstatic when we came upon a local watering hole that we could swim in. It was even better when there was a diving board, a rope swing, or something high to jump off.

My all-time favorite swimming hole was located on the Muskegon River in northern Michigan. Our church held an annual family camping trip and the highlight of the week was canoeing for four hours and ending up at an old bridge. It was here memories were made that will last a lifetime.

While we waited for the canoe livery staff to pick us up, our group would climb the steel beams of the one lane bridge and stand thirty feet above the river. After the river was checked for a safe water level and that there was no debris in the landing zone, one by one we would jump. As a young boy, I am thankful that my father allowed me to experience an adventure like this even though I am sure my mother was quietly objecting in her heart!
(Mike T)

Action Point
Living the Christian life is exactly like jumping off of this bridge or swinging on a rope swing. It is both exhilarating and scary at times. But when you have a God, Who promises to love you, provide for you, and keep you safe, why wouldn't you answer His calling?

What is God calling you to do today? Are you willing to make an epic splash for Jesus Christ?

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Always check out any natural swimming hole for a safe water depth and for dangerous objects, like trees, boulders, or man-made objects, especially in a river where the current can leave debris from year-to-year. God designed us for adventure, but we also need to be safe and cautious about everything we do.

Today's Photograph . . . . We Are Building Relationships, Creating Memories, and Living Life Together (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Isaiah 55:11
So is My Word that goes out from My mouth:  it will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (NIV)

Thoughts
An important aspect of being an outdoorsman is passing along the traditions of our sports to our kids . . . duck hunting, whitetail hunting, elk hunting, moose hunting, fishing, and   backpacking. Whatever the pastime, it's vital for parents and kids to do these activities together.

This fall, I've had a real blessing among the many conversations I've had with folks about whitetail hunting. A natural question where I live is, "Well, have you gotten anything yet?" This gun season, I've found my answer changing from past years. My kids are at ages where they are able to hunt, but they need some direction, help, or mentoring.

In Michigan, our gun season for whitetails lasts two weeks. As our season wrapped up last night, I hunted by myself a grand total of: twice. Virtually every hunt I was involved in, I actually was just sitting alongside one of my kids helping them with the nuances of hunting.

BUT, here's where the blessing comes in . . . many of the guys I've spoken with this Fall have had the exact same situation. They've been out in the woods with their daughters/sons or grandkids just sitting in a blind, TEACHING!!!

Each time I heard someone give me this response, my heart just warmed to hear their answer. Most conversations ended with a memory that was made with their kids, whether they got a deer or not.
(Dave M)

Action Point
This kindness and generosity from parents or grandparents to their kids represents to me exactly what we are supposed to be doing. We are building relationships, creating memories, and living life together.

In the middle of this, we have abundant opportunities to share our faith through the various aspects of creation we witness. What a blessing to be able to share our passion for the outdoors and our faith in the Creator, God, of it all!!!

Keep on mentoring these kids!!! It will bear fruit!!!! Not only in the field, but in the hearts of those involved!!!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Keep your hunting clothes in rubber/plastic containers with a lid on when not hunting to keep the scents away from what you are going to wear outdoors.

Today's Photograph . . . . Meditate On It While Waiting For That Elusive Trophy (Michael T)
Bible Study Verses
Revelation 19:13-16
He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which He is called is The Word of God.  And the armies of Heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.  On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. (ESV)

Thoughts
I love to hunt whitetail deer, they are beautiful to watch in the woods, and I get excited when I see a monster whitetail buck. But, I have to say that when I think of the most regal creature in the timber, I immediately think of a mature bull elk.

He is the king of the woods. He is majestic, regal, powerful, beautiful, graceful, and strong. Hunting elk ranks right up there with getting married.
(Mike T)

Action Point
Do you know that the Church is the Bride of Christ and He is our Bridegroom? I joke about comparing elk hunting with getting married, but it is no joke when I tell you that one day Christ is returning and coming for His bride. The Church is to be married to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

How do you view Christ? Is He majestic and beautiful to you? Is He regal and all-powerful to you? Is His grace enough for you? Is He the Love of your life?

Put down the hunting magazines for a little while and instead read the Bible. Get to know your King on a more intimate and personal level. Pray to Him daily and ask Him to help you fall deeper in love with Him every day. God has given us the Bible so that we can know more about Him.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Take a small Bible into the woods and read a short verse and then meditate on it while waiting for that elusive trophy.

Today's Photograph . . . . A Place Of Meeting; A Sanctuary   (Michael T)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 62:1
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from Him comes my salvation. (ESV)

Thoughts
Under any other situation being strapped to a tree twenty feet in the air would be considered a form of torture. But for the hunter, the tree stand is a place of comfort. It is a refuge from the mundane and a fortress for the beleaguered and a place of solitude for those who want to connect with God in His creation. It is a place of meeting; a sanctuary.

I have been bow hunting for thirty one years, ascending the rungs every fall. It may seem monotonous, but it is varied, different every time you step into the woods. One day, it may be perfect conditions filled with warm air, blue skies, a light wind, and a bed of dry leaves alerting me to any movement of a rutting buck. Or it could be the worst of conditions:  cold, wet, windy, and the wrong moon phase, which negatively influences deer movement. These variables, combined with the adrenaline rush of seeing your first deer, are what make sitting in a tree stand for hours fun.

It's not only the thrill of the hunt that draws me to the tree stand. I go to sort out life's troubles and worries, free from distractions. It is the perfect fortress. It's not just the elevated vantage point or the concealment which makes it a great stronghold, but its location. A tree stand situated in the silence of the forest quiets my mind and filters out the noise of this modern world. I sift my problems and listen with an open heart to God's calling.

I write about the silence, but it is not a silence without sound. The woodland is filled with the flutter and crunch of leaves, scrambling squirrels, and the occasional squawk of a blue jay. It is in this noisy quiet where I connect with God in His creation. I'm surrounded by His handiwork and able to absorb the intricate care and detail that He puts into His living portrait. His creation demands praise and worship of the Creator, and often it is only in the tree stand where I can give that without a clouded heart. In this place of solitude, I allow God to reach deep into me and remove the things that drive me to the tree stand in the first place. I find comfort here.
(Mike T)

Action Point
The tree stand allows me to sort out the sophistication of adulthood, but also reminds me of the days of innocent adolescence, drawing out vivid remembrances of a young buck engaged in a rutting frenzy, missed shots, and climbing down early due to being scared of the darkening sky. Nestled in my tree stand I realize that the hunt is not just about my skill in the field, or the accuracy of my shot, but rather my proficiency in sorting life. My tree stand offers, something most venues do not, a discovery of the human soul.
The stand is a great place of solitude. It is an ideal place to get away from the distractions of life and the picture-perfect place to spend time communing with God. Don't let the hours in the woods pass you by without spending time in prayer, praising God, and allowing Him to search your heart.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Always wear a safety harness when hunting from a tree stand. Check out the new safety systems available at local hunting and outdoor stores. They are safer, more comfortable, and worth the financial investment.

Today's Photograph . . . . Are You Facing A Wall Right Now . . . ?
Badlands in South Dakota   (Jack M)
Bible Study Verse
Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Thoughts
Have you ever hit the wall? Long distance runners know the meaning of this term very well. Have you ever come to the end of your endurance? Ever run out of steam? Ever think you cannot go on anymore? Ever feel like quitting?

The picture with today's devotional is one taken of what my friends call "The Wall." It is a geological formation in the eastern part of the Badlands of South Dakota.

I wonder what the original inhabitants thought of these formations? What did the settlers coming across the plains with their wagons and teams think when they viewed such seemingly impassable and formidable structures?
(Jack M)

Action Point
Are you facing a wall right now? Maybe you are a victim of the economy. Maybe you are one of the long term unemployed. Or perhaps the word "cancer" has confronted you in a consultation with your doctor. Maybe a loved one or friend has died. Or a marriage may have ended in divorce.

In life there are many times when we "hit a wall." There are times when we look out ahead, and all we see are impassable and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Jesus warned us of this. He said each day would have sufficient trials and tribulation.

But those whose trust is in God have a personal relationship with One Who is more than able to meet their needs and help them through the all obstacles.

Run to Him when the problems press, the burdens bear down, the trials seem to triumph. He will give you help and strength to make it through. He will provide a way out. I Corinthians 10:13 promises, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it," (NIV).

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Plan your route. Maps are a resource that is invaluable when in new territories or unfamiliar surroundings. These can be in paper form, or from a cell phone, or a GPS. But, use them. Avoid the "walls" or barriers in your wilderness wanderings by having aid.

Today's Photograph . . . . Like The Sun That Comes Up Because He Has Determined and Declared It So
(Jack M)
Bible Study Verses
One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard:  "Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love"; and, "You reward everyone according to what they have done."
(NIV)

Thoughts
Power and love. Might and mercy. Strength and stability. Commitment and consistency. God is dependable. There is nothing that He cannot do. He has limited what He will do to that which is consistent with His goodness, love and character.

He will never do anything evil, nor will He consider it as a course of action.
(Jack M)

Action Point
You can count on God to do all He promises. You can bank on it. It is a done deal.

Ever heard, "Due to circumstances beyond our control..."? And you can finish the statement from you own experience. Those speaking could not complete what they had promised or contracted to do.

God is not limited like humans. He has power. His power is limitless. He is love. His love is unfailing. What He starts He can finish. What He promises He will do. Like the sun that comes up because He has determined and declared it so, and like the moon that follows its schedule of rises and sets, God is dependable. He is trustworthy.

Do you know Him personally? He is also the judge who will give to each of us what we deserve at the judgment. The only way for us to escape judgment is to be forgiven of our sin.

This forgiveness is in Christ. Acts 10:43 promises, "All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name."  Receive Him today.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make sure you carry the power sources needed for your trips afield. Fuel, batteries, a generator, light sticks and much more can be life savers or make very uncomfortable situations tolerable.

Today's Photograph . . . . He Cannot Be Bribed, Tricked, or Manipulated   (Jack M)
Bible Study Verses
Luke 15:28-31
But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!'  And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. (ESV)

Thoughts
Have you ever treated God like a vending machine? Or maybe like Santa Clause? Have you tried to manipulate Him or obligate Him to do what you want Him to do? Have you ever thought, "If I do this, then God will have to do this in return?" I know that I have been guilty of that very thing.
(Jack M)

Action Point
We need to understand that God owes no one anything. All that He gives is because of His goodness, grace, mercy and love. He cannot be bribed. He cannot be tricked. He cannot be manipulated.

The elder brother in the passage above (Read Luke 15:1-31) was angry because his father was generous and forgiving. He did not like it that his younger, lost brother had been reinstated to full status as a son and as an heir. This certainly cut into his own inheritance.

What amazes us is that the father comes out to seek them both! When he speaks with the older brother, the younger is already present at the feast. The lost younger brother has now been found and is saved. The older, manipulative brother was still standing outside the banquet hall.

Have you accepted God's offer of salvation in Christ, or are you still standing on the outside?

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make a list. Check it twice. When heading out for a trip in the outdoors, especially to a remote area, make a list of all you will need ahead of time. Check off what you will need as you pack it. Chances are the wilderness areas will not have a store, a vending machine, or a retail outlet so you can purchase what you need in an emergency situation.

Today's Photograph . . . . The Great Thing For All Outdoorsmen Is That NOW Is Harvest Time For Us
(Jack M)
Bible Study Verse
John 4:35
Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. (ESV)

Thoughts
Ask a farmer or a rancher what time of the year is her/his favorite, and she/he will probably respond, "Harvest time."

The great thing for all outdoorsmen is that NOW is Harvest Time for us. God has invited, involved, and commissioned us to be workers in His Harvest Time.

A buddy that won't listen to your story (testimony), won't go to church with you, won't read a tract or participate in a small group will react differently when you invite them outdoors. In fact many of them will be waiting at the truck, the field, or the boat when you invite them to hunt or fish with you. So use that time to develop meaningful relationships that will empower and enable a witness in the future if not at the present time.
(Jack M)

Action Point
The outdoors is wide open for evangelism. God is at work at the grass roots level in His plan of offering eternal life for all who will receive it through faith in Christ.

Hunt with a purpose!!!  Bring someone who needs the Lord when you go hunting. Invite them along intentionally to join in the outdoor fun. Ask God then to make them interested in spiritual things, to make them aware of their sin, to make them understand the offer of forgiveness in Christ, and then to have an urgency about getting right with God by receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Bring along a copy of a recent Sportsmen's Devotional when you get ready to hunt or fish. If you are the host, you just have to say that you want God to give you a great day in the outdoors and you want to remember Him first. Read the Scripture and the devotion, have a brief prayer of safety and success, and look to see what the Lord will do.

Today's Photograph . . . . Until Then, We Must Anticipate Them   (Raymond R)
Bible Study Verses
Acts 27:18-20
We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard. On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. (NIV)

Action Point
It was early December and the late cow elk season was just getting underway. Hundreds of hunters spread out over northern Arizona. The lower elevations of the northern country drop as low as five thousand feet where the mountainous range can reach elevations of twelve thousand feet. A well forecasted snow storm was headed for the area.

Most of the hunters took the necessary precautions, warm clothes, heating supplies, and plenty of food. However, some either did not know of the impending storm or were under prepared for its arrival. Soon the winds increased to seventy-eight miles per hour and roughly twenty inches of snow dropped in a short period of time. In the end some thirty hunters had been rescued and two bodies were found in the largest search and rescue mission in Arizona's history.
(Brett M)

Thoughts
Paul was being sent to Rome to appeal his case to Caesar. Ships generally did not travel in the winter months because of storms and changing wind directions. However the decision was made to make the trip, now in October. In an attempt to set port in Phoenix which was a mere 38 miles from their current location, they were stuck by a severe storm which pushed them some 600 miles off course where they shipwrecked at the island of Malta.

Storms are a part of life. We have plans to do certain things and storms interrupt those plans. We have plans to do certain things for the Kingdom of God and storms interrupt those plans and drive us off course. However the storms take us off course from the plans we had, not the plans God has. He knew about the storms coming, they did not take Him off course, only us.

We should embrace these storms realizing that God is in control, not us. That He has a plan for our lives and that plan will contain many, many storms. Our only safe harbor from those storms will ultimately be in Heaven. Until then, we must anticipate them, plan accordingly as best we can, pray for endurance, and ultimately accept God's plan for our lives and be thankful.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Specialty tools for hunting can get expensive. Try using a drywall saw available at any hardware store, as a bone saw. You can find one with a very sturdy handle for half to one third the cost of a bone saw.

Today's Photograph . . . . Do Not Miss Those Opportunities That God Places In Front Of You   (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
James 4:14
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (NIV)

Thoughts
In Arizona children are allowed to hunt as juniors until they turn eighteen years old.  This schedules them to hunt at a different time, usually earlier than the general hunt that most others hunt.

It was opening morning of her final juniors cow elk hunt. She was seventeen and would be going off to college soon, this may be one of our last elk hunts together for a while. These were the thoughts drifting through my mind, as we sat back-to-back, her facing south and me facing north, leaning against each other for support. These thoughts were interrupted by her tugging at me saying that she heard something to the west.

We both began glassing the stands of young oaks, looking for any sign of an elk moving though the fallen autumn leaves. Time must have gotten away from us as we glassed the area nonstop for at least five minutes. Then like an alarm clock blaring us awake early in the morning, a young cow elk barked loudly at us.

As we both turned slowly, we saw standing thirty yards directly south of us, a cow elk. She stared back as us, each of us in amazement that we were so close and none of us sure what to do. Finally, she turned away from us showing her butterscotch colored rump and walked away, slowly blending into the oaks never turning enough to offer a shot.
(Brett M)

Action Point
Life is short. The opportunities that we have in this life are even shorter. Sometimes looking away for just five minutes can cause us to miss an opportunity. Sometimes we miss the opportunity because we think we will always have more time, there is always tomorrow. Sometimes we miss the opportunity because we are afraid. Afraid of what others might think of us, afraid of being rejected or hurt. Sometimes we miss the opportunity because we are simply selfish, wanting to live for ourselves rather than living for God.

James understood that we are but "A mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes," James 4:14c (NIV). Do not miss those opportunities that God places in front of you. You are but a mist that may never again have the opportunity to change a life.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Elk and deer love to eat acorns. However, oak trees do not produce acorns every year. Hunting areas that produced acorns, drawing elk and deer last year, may not produce acorns this year. Make sure that you scout ahead in your hunting area to find which oaks are producing this year.

Today's Photograph . . . . Hunting Can Be Very Humbling   (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Acts 15:36-38
Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing." Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. (NIV)

Thoughts
This fall I accomplished a personal hunting goal, a goal that has taken me a long time to complete. A few weeks back I killed my first black bear and completed the Arizona Big Ten.

The Big Ten is a list of ten big game animals that are found in Arizona. Actually, there are thirteen now, but the original Big Ten is still recognized. When a hunter takes one of each of the ten species in Arizona (out-of-state kills don't count), he has completed his Big Ten.

The ten species are:  Mule Deer, Coues Whitetail Deer, Elk, Antelope, Buffalo, Merriam's Turkey, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, and Javelina.

I came home with one empty tag (like, my unfilled archery deer tag two weeks later) to remember that I still have lots to learn about big game and hunting. Empty tags are very humbling and I have a significant collection of them to remind me to keep my head on straight!

Now, lest you worry about me getting a little big headed here, understand, it has taken me forty-eight years to accomplish this goal. It didn't happen overnight and I was very lucky to draw some hard-to-get tags and I had a lot of help with most of the hunts.

Speaking of bears, I saw my first bear in 1977 and just killed one this year. I did miss a nice cinnamon bear twelve years ago that I should have killed. It wasn't one of my better shots.

I do have a couple of thoughts I want to share here. First, it is easy to get a little prideful about all of this. But, all it takes is to come home with one empty tag (like, my unfilled archery deer tag two weeks later) to remember that I still have lots to learn about big game and hunting.  Empty tags are very humbling and I have a significant collection of them to remind me to keep my head on straight!  Second, the fact that I missed that first bear I shot at wasn't the end of the story.  It took twelve years,  but I finally put my tag on a bear!    (Cliff S)

Action Point
Our spiritual walk is like these stories. First, I've been a Christian for more than fifty years, but still have lots to learn about God, Jesus, the Bible, and living the Christian life. I've listened to stories about Jesus since I was old enough to walk. I've read through the Bible numerous times and have done many book studies over the years. Believe it or not, I even sang in the church choir in my younger days, but you have to promise not to tell anybody about that!

Even now, it still always amazes me how God reveals truths when He knows I'm ready to hear them, and not a second sooner. Second, I do fail (that's a politically correct word for sin) just like every man that walks this Earth.

But, failure isn't fatal, it's not the end of the story. You see, God has forgiven me for my past, present, and future sins because I have accepted Jesus as my Savior. I am washed by Jesus' blood and am just as secure in my promise of eternity with God as those that are in His presence right now! Not because of anything I have done, mind you, but because of what God has done. No pride here, I am a sinner saved by grace! Are you?

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Hunting can be very humbling. About the time you think you know it all an animal makes you look silly! None of us know everything there is to know about the animals and pursuing them. I've found that I can learn something from every hunter I meet, even if what I learn is something not to do!

Today's Photograph . . . . Don't Lose Your Focus On The Target   (Tom B)
Bible Study Verses
Matthew 3:1-3
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven has come near." This is He who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:  "A voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.'" (NIV)

Thoughts
At the 2004 Athens Olympics U.S. shooter, Matt Emmons fired at the wrong target with his final shot. It cost him a commanding lead in the Olympic 50-meter three-position rifle final and ruined his chance for a second gold medal.

Leading by three points and needing only to get near the bull's-eye to win, Emmons fired at the target in lane three while shooting in lane two. When no score appeared, he gestured to officials that he thought there was some sort of error with his target.

He was wrong. Officials huddled before announcing that Emmons had cross-fired - an extremely rare mistake in elite competition - and awarded him a score of zero. That dropped Emmons to eighth place.

Action Point
What target are you shooting at? Be like John the Baptist by helping prepare your friends and neighbors to have a relationship with Jesus Christ:
  •  Begin by putting together a "Ten Most Wanted List."
  •  Build relationships with them.
  •  Invite them to church, to fish, or to hunt with you.
  •  Share the Gospel message with them.
Don't be like Matt Emmons, letting your gaze drift away from the target. "Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him." Don't lose your focus on the target.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When shooting a new gun for the first time, start with sighting in at 25 yards just to get on paper. Once on paper and reasonably centered, move out to 100 yards. When you shoot at 100 for the first time, try putting up some brown wrapping paper behind the target. If you miss, this way you can see where you are hitting.

Today's Photograph . . . . Will I Sink Before I Get There (Tom B)

Bible Study Verse
Isaiah 55:6
Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while He is near. (NIV)
Thoughts
Have you ever had a boat that sprang a leak?
I had a guide friend that liked to fish offshore. He originally spent most of his time fishing the Galveston Bay system, but several years ago we had a hard freeze along the Gulf Coast that caused a massive fish die off of speckled trout. Many of the guides who made their living taking clients fishing for trout, had to go to Plan B-fishing offshore for the types of fish found there.

My friend bought a used offshore boat so he could join the crowd. Unfortunately he discovered on one of his trips he was taking on water. His bilge pumps weren't putting out the water as fast as it was coming in. He barely made it back to the marina with a boat full of seawater. He was lucky; he, his boat and his clients survived.
(Tom B)
Action Point
In the story above, my guide friend's boat was taking on water, not emptying it fast enough, and slowly sinking. But let's reverse the situation. Maybe in your life you have everything you need; life is good, right? But slowly you notice that output is slowly starting to exceed input, and no matter what you do the leak keeps going on. Scary feeling, isn't it?????

The reverse analogy could be anything in our lives. Maybe it's a job that no longer meets the increasing needs of you or your family. Maybe it's a marriage or family relationship that was once was full, but now is slowly breaking up. No matter how hard you work, no matter what you work at changing in your life, you're still sinking.
What do you? You run for the safety of the boat dock or marina. How far away is the dock or marina? Will I sink before I get there?
The safety of the harbor is right next to us. "Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while He is near," Isaiah 55:6. The Lord is always near, ready to give answers, or just carry on a conversation with us. "Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will freely pardon," Isaiah 55:7 (NIV).
Our God has promised to be there for us, even though sometimes we aggravate Him with what we do, how we act, our thoughts. ""As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts," Isaiah 55:9 (NIV).

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Small aluminum boats are great for meandering around quiet coves, backwater bays, seeking out willing fish, but many of the ones I have owned or fished out of developed leaks. The problem is finding where the leak is. A quick and easy way to find the leak is to get the boat out of water, put it on a boat trailer. A couple of saw horses will do, and fill it with water. Get under it and wait for the water to start dripping out. You will have found your leak.

Today's Photograph . . . . A Biblical Tirade Is Not Going To Save Them (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Ecclesiastes 10:12
Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips. (NIV)
Thoughts
How simple this phrase, but how true the words are.
As outdoorsmen and women we see Gods majesty every time we are in the outdoors. We are humbled by every single sunrise and every glorious sunset.
Flipping though the "TV" channels the other day I heard a so called "comedian" say he does not believe in the "magical man in the sky." I was insulted by this, but yet felt sorry for his egotistical views that his talents are his and his alone. As we who believe know, the evidence is there to find and to have faith in the rest is to be in the glory of God.
(Jim C)
Action Point
If a nonbeliever ever questions you, a Biblical tirade is probably not going to save them.
I have prayed about how to interact with people as there are times that I am intimidated by an opening to spread the good news. The best way for me, is just to tell of my life experience, God will take care of the rest, as he always does.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
There are essentials that should be in every backpack when hunting for the day. Flashlight or head lamp, snacks, pocket knife, and don't forget the toilet paper. All these can come in handy when out in the woods!
