Today's Photograph . . . . Goose Lake, White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas (NWRC.USGS.GOV)
Bible Study Verse
Proverbs 17:22
A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. (NKJV)

Thoughts
One of my family's honey holes for fishing is in the wilds of the White River National Wildlife Refuge in central Arkansas. We take a small twelve-foot boat, motor until we can't motor anymore and wade through the mud pulling the boat to get to the remote lakes.

As you can imagine, we see and hear some pretty strange things back in the deep woods. On one such trip, we heard what I now surmise to be a bird; but at the time, it was downright eerie! It went, "WHOOOOOOOPPP!"

We looked wide-eyed at each other as the weird sound echoed through the river-bottoms. Then my brother whispered, "I guess a sasquatch slipped in the mud!" We literally rolled in the bottom of the muddy boat laughing. I laughed until my sides hurt. We still don't know what made the eerie sound, but my hat is off to it. We had a great laugh at its expense!

Action Point
I hate the fact that the world and Satan has taken so much of our joy away. Often we live so focused on our jobs, the economy, making ends meet, family priorities and more, and leave little time or energy for any joy.

We serve a God of joy. I can just see Jesus when the children would pile up in His lap. Can't you see Him tickling their belly as they playfully pulled at his beard? I can imagine a sweet smile on His face as He lifted a little one up in the air and spun around; and a smile now as we obey a command or use His strength to overcome a weakness.

The bottom line is that He is a God of warm joy. Let's seek to know Him deeper. Let's determine to allow His joy to penetrate our lives. Let's demonstrate Him to the world by being a people of infectious joy!!! Be a contagious laugher. Then tell the world that it's Jesus who brings the joy!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
In Arkansas, we warm up for deer season by squirrel hunting. September, when our squirrel season opens, is a great time to slip around quietly through the woods. You can practice your stalking, your marksmanship, and bring home some meat that is great with dumplings or in Cajun stew or gumbo, all in one trip. Give it a try!

Today's Photograph . . . . Whitetail Buck (FWS)
Bible Study Verses
Joshua 14:10b-12
"Now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said." (NKJV)

Thoughts
In Arkansas, deer season is beginning to really wind down in late December. The rut is long since gone and the orange army has retreated. Rifle season is about over, deer are wary from the last two months of hunting, and it usually rains a lot. But sometimes, a die-hard hunter can come away with a great deer in December.

In 2006, my middle son and I braved frigid weather on a Saturday morning to sit in our tree. We walked away with a nice non-typical nine-pointer. Man, talk about a fast-break slam-dunk right at the end of the quarter! I love to finish well!
(Brian H)

Action Point
You've got to love Caleb! He's wandered for forty years with the rest of the nation and now he's in his eighties--ready for the rocking chair, right? Absolutely not!!! Caleb says to give him what God promised him all those years ago!!! Giants in the land? No problem! Caleb is still doing what he always has done--following God.

My challenge to you is this: regardless of your age, gender, or any other factor, determine right now to finish well. Take the time that you have left on this Earth and make the most of it for God. It may or may not be December in your life, but finish well regardless.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Spending too much on seed for your food plots? Check your local discount store for the bargain bags of birdseed. Read the contents carefully. Many of the birdseeds on the market are largely comprised of wheat and other "goodies" that are safe to sow and well received by deer and turkeys. Last year, I paid $15 for a small bag of the good stuff and less than $5 for a bag of birdseed.

Today's Photograph . . . . Sasquatch Of  The Cave (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Acts 8:26
Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is desert. (NKJV)

Thoughts
I remember hiking with my Dad and coming upon a cave tucked into the wall of a cliff. It was rather tall, as caves go, standing about seven feet. I was scared, but decided to enter and find where it led.

As I climbed in, I carried a flashlight in one hand and a knife in the other. I am not sure what the knife would have done for me, but I felt better having it. As I moved farther into it, the cave began to shrink rapidly, so that within a dozen feet I was down on my hands and knees. Then I was on my belly crawling. Before too long, I was squeezing through a very narrow passage that forced me to wiggle while lying on my side with one hand in front of me, holding the flashlight, and the other down at my side.

Then I felt a sting, then another and another; something was attacking me--biting and stabbing every part of my body. The more I moved, the more it hurt. I dropped the flashlight and the knife and began trying to wiggle back out. My mind raced with images of every conceivable venomous, poisonous, or sharp-clawed creature whose home I had just invaded. Every move intensified the pain! I finally managed to get onto my knees and crawl backwards to the opening.

My Dad looked very concerned at the mouth of the cave; and based on my screams, was sure I had been attacked by the Sasquatch that inhabited it.

When I emerged, I was covered head to toe in porcupine quills that littered the floor of this porcupine family's home.
(Brett M)

Action Point
Phillip had a ministry in Samaria that was going well when God told him to go travel an unknown desert road. God instructed Noah how to build a boat on dry land in a time in which rain had never fallen. God had Moses leave Egypt and take the Israelites with him to an unknown destination. Hosea was to marry a prostitute. A prostitute!!! Talk about being outside your comfort zone!!!

Sometimes God tells us to go to places where we are not comfortable, ones that are contrary to the warmth and coziness of our lives--places that appear dark, scary and may or may not contain Sasquatches.

God does not need us to do these things for Him; He is perfectly capable of accomplishing what He needs without our help. He takes us into these seemingly fearful places for us--to increase our trust in Him--and for others whose lives He allows our experiences to impact.

The next time God asks you to go where you are not comfortable, remember what Paul says in Philippians 4:13, " I can do all things through Christ[a] who strengthens me," (NKJV).

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Porcupine quills are barbed and can deeply imbed themselves into the skin if left untreated. Use pliers to grasp the quill as closely to the skin as possible and pull sharply. Afterwards, apply an antibiotic cream to the affected area.

Today's Photograph . . . . Walhalla Glades Indian Ruin Grand Canyon North Rim
Bible Study Verses
James 3:5-6
Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. (NKJV)

Thoughts
They were a small group of campers enjoying a vacation away from home. They left their campground and their campfire unattended. Maybe they were going for more supplies or perhaps they were going to explore God's majesty. Regardless, when they returned, their campfire had sparked a 2000-acre wildfire just a few miles from the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

I was in the area just after the fire's final containment. Logs and stumps still smoldered and smoke lay low early in the morning. Although my purpose was to scout the area, I was intrigued by the devastation. In addition to being a firefighter, I am also a fire investigator. Limited to urban fires where a large fire is tens-of-thousand square feet, a fire of thousands of acres peaked my interest.

I located the point of origin--a campfire that looked like any other, but the difference was that 50ft from the campfire was a small patch of burned grass, then another, and another; then a blackened oak thicket, and additional black pockets, until you could see where the fire climbed into the crowns of the towering ponderosa pines. By the time I reached the far end of the head of the fire some two miles away, where the forest service firefighters had bravely managed to stop the advancing inferno, it looked like a moonscape, black and desolate, void of color or life.
(Brett M)

Action Point
It surprised me that the fire started as just a pocket of grass on fire some 50 feet from the campfire. Then it grew into additional spot fires and ultimately a 2000-acre forest fire.

James describes our tongue (our words) as having the same effect as that wild fire. Sometimes spoken in haste, sometimes as gossip, or often just as thoughtless, careless banter. The words that start out small and appear innocent enough can explode into destruction--destruction of lives and of relationships. Once those words are spoken, it is impossible to reverse or control them.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
There was a clearing of absolutely no brush in a 40 foot radius of this campfire ring. Although attempts were made to establish a safe, smart campfire, there is no substitute for attentiveness. When leaving camp, make sure the fire is drowned out with plenty of water.

Today's Photograph . . . . Just About Every Time I Go Into The Woods, I Try To Be Something I'm Not (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Ephesians 5:1-2
Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (NIV)

Thoughts
Just about every time I go into the woods, I try to be something I'm not. I imitate something else--perhaps a dying rabbit, to attract a coyote or mountain lion; or maybe a worm, to attract a smallmouth bass. I almost always try to imitate something that will help me successfully outwit my prey.

In my life as a Christian, I have but One to imitate--God--by being like His Son, Jesus. One of the ways Jesus taught us to imitate God is by loving those He came to seek and to save. He loved us, even to the point of death. That is being like God; and that is what is going to attract others to take God's "bait" and accept His gift of salvation.
 (Cliff S)

Action Point
Being a Christian isn't all that complicated. We are to simply be like Jesus, and, therefore, be like God. To do that, we must love as Jesus loved--the Father above all else, and others as He loved them.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you're going to go varmint calling, be sure of the prey species in the area where you're headed and have the appropriate calls. Then, listen to some tapes or DVDs and practice. That's right, drive the neighbor's dog crazy!

Today's Photograph . . . . Those Wild Campfire Stories (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 32:1-2
Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one
whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. (NIV)

Thoughts
David had to be thinking about hunters and fishermen when he added the last phrase to verse two "in whose spirit is no deceit."

When you're sitting around the campfire telling tall tales, most of those listening can tell the true story from some exaggerated fable! Just how big was that buck? Well, I remember that the first time you told that story, he was an average two-point. When did he grow to the huge four-point dimensions you're now describing? It's all in good fun, makes great stories for the kids listening; and it's easy to forgive the friend for the little bit of deceit.

In this passage, the phrase carries a far greater meaning. Only those who are honest with God about their sins will receive His forgiveness. David said that God blesses those who do so by not counting their sins against them--He has forgiven their sins. It is probably a good idea to be up-front with God and leave the "deceit" to stories around the campfire!
(Cliff S)

Action Point
Be honest with God; be in agreement with Him about your sinful condition. If you will confess your sins, God has promised over and over again in His word to forgive you and to accept you around His campfire!!!

I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to hearing His fishing stories!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Have fun with your hunting and fishing partners in the outdoors. Tell those wild campfire stories; make the kids eyes grow wide with amazement, and somehow, record the stories so they'll outlive you.

Today's Photograph . . . . Whitetail Buck (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Luke 16:13
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."  (NIV)

Thoughts
I was in my stand on a cool, clear, and crisp November afternoon. It was the perfect day to be hunting whitetail. The rut was in full gear. The possibility of getting a trophy buck was high, plus it was a great opportunity to get away from the stresses of life.

The monster eight-point appeared out of nowhere. I began to focus on the deer's rack. In a matter of moments, over twenty years of practice and training flew out the window. I already had the deer mounted and hanging over my bed. The only thing left to do was to convince the wife that this was the best spot to hang my first trophy Michigan whitetail!

Armed with only two arrows, I released my first shot into the mud at his feet. The second shot flew just over his back. I waited until he sauntered out of sight and climbed down to retrieve my first arrow. He returned and presented me with an easy thirty yard shot. Smack! I hit a small sapling.

It took me a week to get over the pain of missing this buck, but it gave me time to reflect on why I had missed three times. I realized that I wasn't focused on the right thing, those intangibles that had made me a successful hunter over the years. I was too focused on the trophy and not on the hunt.
(Mike T)

Action Point
We can learn a lot about life through our hunting experiences. A week later, I was fortunate to get a second chance (fourth chance) at the trophy eight- point. This time my focus was clear and right on target. The result was victory and redemption.

What is your life focus? Are you serving two masters?

Jesus Christ says it best, "You cannot serve both God and money."

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make sure you have more than two arrows in your quiver. You never know how many opportunities you may get. Who knows, it may even be with the same animal.

Today's Photograph . . . . See What They Teach You (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Genesis 3:1-5
Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden? ' " And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' " Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.  For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (NKJV)

Thoughts
The story of the fall of man is just one of the many times individuals in the Old Testament have sought out "God Status." There are other examples of God's creation seeking to be just like Him, such as Cain deciding who lives and who dies, Lamech who chose to change the rules of marriage, Nimrod and others seeking to be as powerful as a god, and a group of people who had a lame-brain idea to build a tower in an attempt to literally reach the level of "God Status."

In what ways do we try to become like God or take His place?
(Michael T)

Action Point
How many times do we try to set up our own rules, create our own timelines, and make demands for how our life is supposed to play out? Do we try to take matters into our own hands? Do we try to become men or women of power? Do we dictate to God, like Cain, what is an acceptable sacrifice?

If anything mentioned here hits home, confess your sins to the one and only true God, and seek His forgiveness for attempting to claim "God Status."

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make a special effort to take your children out into the woods or the field with you. If you do not have children, see if you can borrow one or become part of a mentoring program. Wait just a minute before you take off! Don't be tempted to teach them all of your tricks instead passively engage and see what they teach you about hunting or maybe life.

Today's Photograph . . . . Nice Bass (Ron M)
Bible Study Verses
1 Samuel 17:38-40
So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, "I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them." So David took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. (NKJV)

Thoughts
I think everybody who knows anything about David could finish this story. David accomplishes the improbable and defeats the Philistine giant, over nine feet tall, with a single stone hurled from his slingshot with God's divine help.

David stayed true to who he was--a shepherd who was used to defending his sheep from attack by bears and lions with simple weapons. He didn't pretend to be somebody that he was not and the Lord blessed him in his life.

I used to be one of those anglers that had the patches, hats, decals, and all the other stuff that fishing tackle companies pass out to anglers. It's a good deal for these companies to get free advertising on anglers walking around. I still have hats and T-shirts with fishing logos emblazoned on them. I think they look great and still wear some of them.
(Tom B)

Action Point
There is nothing wrong with fishing tackle companies using promotional advertisements that picture anglers wearing the advertised items. The trouble comes when anglers try to assume the identity of someone they are not by wearing all these patches and clothing. Pride tends to override who they really are and, sometimes, even their common sense.

I have seen grown men walk the aisles of large fishing tackle showrooms wearing shirts emblazoned with all kinds of emblem of fishing tackle manufacturers. These fellows were not professional anglers, but wannabes. They even talked the talk of their favorite fishing hero.

Be true to yourself as David was. If the armor doesn't fit and  hinders the real you, don't wear it.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
I have a collection of hats that different boat and fishing tackle companies have given me. I like some of the hats more than others because of the way they fit or look. I keep an extra hat in my truck so I will have it when I need it to keep the sun out of my eyes. Keeping a spare hat in your truck or boat can be a blessing when you forget to bring one or if it's blown off and lost on a fast run across the lake or bay.

Today's Photograph . . . . Now, It's Just A Passion (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Acts 9:3-4
As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" (NKJV)

Thoughts
Saul had his life turned around 180 degrees while on the road to Damascus. My life also changed drastically about 20-25 yrs ago. I wasn't off killing people, but I was intent on reducing the largemouth bass population.

I bought my first bass boat, an aluminum Bass Tracker, in the early 80's. From there I graduated up to a Skeeter fiberglass boat. It had a lot of the whistles and bells popular at the time. I was obsessed with bass fishing, made two or three trips a month to my favorite fishing lakes. I remember mouthing prayers several times as I left Jasper, Texas, a town close to Sam Rayburn Reservoir--thanking the Lord for the ability to fish and, "Please don't let me loose these opportunities!"

Guess what: after going through some financial difficulties, the boat had to be sold. Without a boat, fishing most of the major lakes in Texas is pretty much impossible. Either there is no access to the water or the shoreline is privately owned.

My obsession with bass fishing had been dealt a severe blow. I had a Damascus experience. Though I hadn't been knocked off a donkey or horse by a blinding light, I was knocked out of my boat!
(Tom B)

Action Point
Like Saul, my life had suddenly changed. It took me longer than it took Saul to be able to see clearly again. Slowly the Lord opened my eyes to see that there were other ways to pursue the sport. He had cured me of the obsession.

Now, it's just a passion in my life. He showed me different ways of fishing. I found a bass club that had lots of empty seats open to non-boaters in their tournaments. I discovered there are many ponds (stock tanks) in Texas that you can fish with permission. Some of these tanks had better fishing than the large impoundments. He also showed me some new fishing techniques that I would never had experienced otherwise. He opened my eyes!

I am not saying that the modern bass boats with all of the features are bad news. They are really an enjoyable way to pursue the fish, and I would love to have another boat if that were possible. But I learned that I needed to have a proper perspective on the total picture!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Part of the joy of fishing is learning new ways, new challenges in catching fish. An ultra light spinning rod and reel, or fly rod, equipped with mini lures or flies slowly worked around the edges of a pond can produce some pulse-raising excitement!

Today's Photograph . . . . It's Gonna Rain? (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Jeremiah 9:23-24
"Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know Me, that I am the LORD, Who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD. (NIV)

Thoughts
I am privileged to be on my agency's national honor guard team. Five years ago we were in Washington, D.C. on our way to an event in full regalia, when we passed the front gates of the White House. By the hubbub going on, it was obvious something was up.

I asked a uniformed secret service officer what was happening, and he said that the president would be driving out at any moment. I asked if my team could come in and stand by to wait for his arrival--after all, we were federal conservation officers, and we know the president. The officer asked me, "But does the president know you?" The officer's words hit home. Then he gave us that smile, and we were shortly on our way!
(Ruben C)

Action Point
Many people say they love God and have the fish symbols on their cars to prove it. But Jesus says of those who do not do the will of His father, " . . . 'I never knew you. . .' " Matthew 7:23b..

Does God know you because you do His will? Like our almost encounter with the president, if He doesn't, you're not getting past the gates. He simply wants us to show our faith in Him by what we do. Read James 2:18.

Get to know God. Put your faith in Him, exercise kindness, justice, righteousness, and the like, and He will certainly know you too!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
In the old days--Okay, let's say 20 years ago and beyond--I remember going on hunting trips, and every morning it was the same thing: "Is it going to rain today?" "Is it going to be hot or cold?" Well you don't have to guess anymore if you have a satellite radio subscription, a smart phone, or at the least, a weather radio with you. My favorite is the weather radio function on my FRS radio. I can tune in to one of the 10 channels and usually get reception on one of them wherever I am, then figure out the day's weather before I leave camp. I often hear the same response from my old man who owns the same radio, yet still seems to live 40 years ago: "Really, it's gonna snow? How do you know that?"

"Instincts, Dad. Instincts."

Today's Photograph . . . .  Butchering Livestock And Wild Game Was Nothing Out Of The "Norm" (MQ)
Bible study Verses
Mark 7:14-16
Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them." (NIV)

Thoughts
I come from a ranching and farming heritage. Growing up in a very rural area, I was tasked from my earliest childhood with taking care of horses, livestock, and hunting--the only kind of life I knew until adulthood. Butchering livestock and wild game was nothing out of the "norm".

Along with that, harvesting various parts of animals for consumption, not considered edible by your average urban dweller, was also normal--the stomach of a cow or the liver of a deer to name a few. I have mentioned this to some friends throughout my life with less than positive responses: "Ugh! Cow tongue?!" "You eat rattlesnake?! You can't eat that stuff!"
(Ruben C)

Action Point
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. Read James 1:23-24.

Just as eating the less popular parts of an animal will not make you unclean, if your actions are not forthright, affiliation with a respected sportsmen group will not make you a true sportsman. Likewise, it does not matter what church you belong to, if your life and doctrine are not in agreement with it, membership will be of no advantage to you. "But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it-they will be blessed in what they do," James 1:25 (NIV).

Do not be tempted to cut ethical corners in the field, but be an ambassador for Christ wherever you are. You never know when the clean bright light that comes from you will shine on someone who will be influenced toward Christ!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When dealing with anti-hunters or anti-meat eaters, try not to overpower them with your opinions on the subject. They expect that from us. I always find it interesting to listen and take a philosophical approach. I have influenced at least one non-meat eater this way. Though he still does not eat meat, he is actually an advocate of hunting!

Today's Photograph . . . . Rock Mountain Goat (Wayne M)
Bible Study Verses
Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NIV)

Thoughts
Even the wild creatures will kneel before Jesus and give him glory, honor, and fame.  The day is coming soon when the above verses will be a reality.  Christ will be revealed as the ruler of heaven and earth.
(Jack M)

Action Point
Submission.  This word is often abused, refused, and rejected.  It seems no one wishes to submit.  That attitude is true in the schools, the work place, and even in our homes.

Protests are made.  "Sit in's" are staged.  "Occupy" movements abound.  Protestors worldwide are in the streets throwing bottles, cans, bricks, and even flaming "Molotov Cocktails" to burn down buildings, destroy vehicles, and wreak mayhem to prove their particular point.

But, submission is a necessary part of life and living.  If everyone is in charge, no one is in charge.  The result is chaos.

We are instructed to obey the law and to honor those in authority.  We must obey the orders of law enforcement officers, game wardens, conservation officers, and park rangers for conscience sake.  We must do this because we are commanded so in the Word.  Read  Romans 13:1-7.

There is coming a day when Jesus will clearly be revealed, and His rule will be absolute.  The result of His rule will be a time of peace and prosperity the world had never seen.
It is better to submit to Him now.  Fall on your knees.  Believe in Him as Savior and Lord, and follow Him in this life as well as eternity.  Receive His forgiveness of sin and become His follower.  You will be rewarded for all eternity!!!

Sportsman's Tip of the Day
Respect those in law enforcement.  Obey the laws.  Do all you can to set a good example for others in these matters.  Make sure you have the proper licenses and permits.  Secure permission from property owners.

Today's Photograph . . . . Snow Can Be A Curse Or A Blessing (Wayne M)
Bible Study Verse
Isaiah 1:18
"Come now, let us settle the matter," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." (NIV)

Thoughts
Snow can be a curse or a blessing.  Where winter is dominant and difficult, it controls many things, including travel, events, and personal agendas.
Snow is, also, a blessing.  The first snow always provides the pheasant hunter some new opportunities for success.  Tracking in snow is desirable during the deer camps and other hunts.

Snow provides much needed moisture every year.  It replenishes the soil, builds up subsoil moisture, and allows the germination of winter wheat and other crops.

The freshness, cleanness and beauty of the newly fallen snow is magnificent!!! The whiteness of snow is also a metaphor reminding us of our being forgiven, being justified, and being right with God.
(Jack M)

Action Point
Guilt is an oppressive weight.  Some never seem to overcome guilt over their past actions, feelings, motivations, and choices.

God invites us to newness, to cleanness.  He invites us to a life without guilt.  He invites us to eternal life with Him.
How can that be?  He is willing and just to forgive our sins.  When He forgives us, He justifies us.  He declares us right with Him.  He does this based upon the work of His Son Jesus.  Jesus came to the Earth to become that means of forgiveness. "God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God,"  II Corinthians 5:21 (NIV).
Let the snow remind you of who you are in Christ, or what you can be if you receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Plan for snow.  Have an emergency kit in your car in case you are stranded.  Check the weather forecast to make sure it is safe.  If you have to walk far in deeper snow, consider the purchase of snow shoes.  If you have to travel far, perhaps cross country skies are better.

Today's Photograph . . . . Retrieving A Pheasant (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Proverbs 18:24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. (KJV)

Thoughts
The cock pheasant flushed with the traditional cackle and the shot was taken. Gliding to the ground, I knew the bird would be on the run.

Mattie, my fifteen-pound, eight-month-old Boykin Spaniel, broke for the retrieve. You could see the amazement in her eye when she caught this strange bird. "It looks more like a fancy chicken than a quail," she was thinking. This was her first pheasant retrieve. Without hesitating, she jumped right on the bird.

They looked like two little boys in the backyard wrestling. She was on top, and then the bird was on top. After a minute of this tussle, Mattie just backed off a couple of steps to regroup.

Buddy, my two-year-old English Setter, stepped in and scooped up the bird, shook it a few times; and the fight was over. Then, he did the most interesting thing--he put it down for Mattie.

She rushed over, grabbed the bird, and brought it to me. When I took it from her, she stood there so proudly. As I looked up, Buddy was standing and watching in the distance, pleased. I guess even a dog needs a buddy.
(Joey H)

Action Point
Everybody, from time to time, gets into a situation, has to make a decision, and needs a buddy--someone to help.

Jesus Christ has been my Friend, my Buddy, if you please, for years. He guides me, teaches me, encourages me, and loves me. When I get in a tight that I cannot manage, He is always there to step in and take over.

He really is a true Friend Who is closer than a brother. A long time ago, I discovered that I needed a buddy. How about you?

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Begin crate training your pup on the day that you bring him home. If the pup is in the house with you and the family, use his crate in which to let him rest, have a snack, and even spend his nights. The crate will help you manage him and also give him his space. When you begin to take him to the field, loading him in his dog box will never be a problem.

Today's Photograph . . . . On One Particular Archery Elk Hunt, I Thought . . . (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Mark 13:33
Watch! Be alert! For you don't know when the time is coming. (HCSB)

Thoughts
Anyone who is a seasoned hunter knows to always be alert, watching for your quarry. We learn a skill like this through our mistakes. On one particular archery elk hunt, I thought I was doing my best--moving slowly and watching intently for movement or the shape or color of an elk through the trees. But what I didn't do was to notice the huge bull elk bedded down behind a log just 20 yards in front of me. Of course, he spooked and I never even got an arrow knocked for a shot.

Jesus instructs us to be watching for signs of His return, well-grounded in our relationship with Him, and knowing what His Word says about the end times. I pray that you and I will be alert and ready with anticipation for the day He comes again!!! Maybe Today!!!
(Jimmy S)

Action Point
Just as we put in time to learn our hunting spots and the behavior of the animals that we hunt, we should be learning God's word so we will be ready for Him, without the risk of deception.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Purchase a set of topographical maps of the area you are going to hunt. Learn how to use them and learn the lay of the land. This will help familiarize yourself well with the area and will add to your success and safety during your hunt.

Today's Photograph . . . . The Better My Chances Of Bagging (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Philippians 3:14
I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

Thoughts
As an archery hunter, I have learned that the more I strive at becoming a better shot through practice, the better my chances of bagging that trophy animal I so desire.

What's your passion? What are you repetitively practicing to perfect--a perfect false cast with a fly rod, longer shots with your rifle, a great wildlife photo, or steer roping? You get the point by now, I'm sure.

The lesson here is, if we practice our Christian life by praying, studying our Bibles, and seizing daily opportunities that God places before us, we become more effective men and women of God. He is the Expert!
(Jimmy S)

Action Point
It's good to spend time practicing our shooting so that we don't wound and loose an animal.

Evaluate whether you are spending time with the Father so that you don't lose your focus on the important things in life. Then, He will bless you with the time you need to practice your other passions!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Fish the down-wind side of a lake or pond in sustained, heavy wind. Forage will be concentrated on that side of the lake or pond and bass will move in to feed. A spinner bait is a good choice when fishing for these aggressive fish.

Today's Photograph . . . . Raise The Percentage Of Fat And Protein When You Are Hunting Them (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Philippians 4:19
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

Thoughts
Always looking for a new way to manage my weight. At many events where I speak, folks often offer me their great diet plan. A few weeks ago, a fellow told me about his latest. "It's called the dog food diet," he stated. "You just fill a pocket with dried dog kibble and whenever you get hungry, just eat a handful. I lost close to fifty pounds in four months, but I did end up in the hospital ICU."

"Did the dog food poison you?" I asked.

"No," he replied. "I was just sitting in the middle of the road scratching myself and a truck hit me!"

The TV commercial says, "Life comes at you fast." Maybe you were just sitting there living life, scratching if you please, and then, out of nowhere you are run over. As much as we prepare, it is not difficult to be knocked off your feet. At this point, Christ is there. In the middle of the storm, in the darkness of the night, and in the silence of the fury, He stands there saying, "Come unto Me." I've been in that difficult place, and He was there. He will be there for you!!!
(Joey H)

Action Point
I do not want my relationship to God to be just an open-in-case-of-emergency relationship. So, I walk with Him every day. Then, when life comes at me fast, I am ready.

Every day, in every way, acknowledge Him, and you to will be ready.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When I am on the road and it is time to fill my bus with diesel, I call an FHA loan officer and look for a well-used truck stop with good quality fuel. Your dog's food is just as important. Feed a high quality dry food to your dogs. Raise the percentage of fat and protein when you are hunting them. Then, back it down during those slow days of summer. Stay away from table scraps and feed a good dry kibble.

Today's Photograph . . . . A Perfect Fire (Janet B)
Presidents Day 2012
Bible Study Verse
I John 1:7
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. (NKJV)

Thoughts
After a long enjoyable day deer hunting, my son and I were sitting around the perfect campfire he had built. We had been there for awhile just enjoying life when one of the logs rolled out and away from the fire. We were both too comfortable to move so we just let it lay there and watched it slowly burn its self out. After a while my son finally got up and kicked the log back into the fire. Within seconds, that log was a blaze of fire again.

The next morning resting under a tree, I started thinking about that log in the fire. God mentions several times the importance of being among fellow believers and staying in fellowship with other Christians. There is power and strength in numbers. I know for me, it is easier to stay on fire for God when I am around other Christians. But when I have been away for awhile, it is difficult to keep that fire burning as hot and as bright as I should. The devil knows how to poke you in hopes that you will become separated from God.

Don't wait for something to happen that kicks you back to God. If you have been out of church for awhile or away from your bible studies, don't wait any longer. Become focused on Him. You will be surprised how much better you will feel and how fast that spark will turn back into a blaze.
(Dave W)

Action Point
Today is Presidents Day. Take some extra time to pray for our leaders. We all can agree, they need it now more than ever.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When preparing an area for a fire ring, make sure to clear a space beyond your ring so that when sparks fly and that log roles out, there is no danger of that perfect fire getting out of control.

Today's Photograph . . . . Elk (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Psalms 43:3-4
Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill
and to Your dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding Joy, and I will praise You with the lyre, O God, my God.  (ESV)

Thoughts
At age twenty, I had the privilege of bow hunting for elk in the Colorado Rockies. After shooting a 4x5 rag-horn elk, I found myself lost and wandering in the wilderness. It was early evening and darkness began settling in. My only light source was a very small hand held flashlight. Trekking through the steep and difficult terrain would be difficult. If that wasn't enough, another challenge shadowed me when my light began to dim.

Hiking for hours had drained its power and it was only moments from being extinguished forever. Tired and worn out, I stood at the bottom of a deep and dark valley,, faced with an extremely difficult climb. Three quarters of the way up the steep incline, my light died as well as my spirit. Lost and alone, I broke down and prayed.

I would spend the night out in the mountains, but not without God answering my prayers. After composing myself, I felt it was important to get to at least the top of the hill before hunkering down for the night. Upon cresting the ridge, the moon illuminated a field of golden heather and a two-track trail. I was able to travel the rest of the way with a light unto my feet.
(Michael T)

Action Point
Many times in life we find ourselves lost in a dark world without a light. Sometimes it is the blackness of our souls or the darkness of this world that extinguishes our light. We attempt to draw upon our own resources in hopes of meeting our own needs, but find the illuminating power to be weak or fading away.

Put your focus on the Light of this world, Jesus Christ, and let His light and truth lead you.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Instead of using a regular hand held flashlight on your next adventure, invest in a hands free, lightweight, and space saving headlamp. You can buy affordable lightweight headlamps at any store. This will illuminate the possibilities the next time adventure finds you in the dark.
