Today's Photograph . . . . Instead Of Running From God, Run To Him   (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 22:1
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? (NIV)

Thoughts
The desert place. The time in the wilderness. The dry time. The land between. The feeling of being abandoned, left alone. And He does not answer. Yes, you remember the time. We all understand the feeling. It feels like the skies are made of bronze: that the prayers are just a sham, just words that are bouncing off the ceiling. Our guard is down, our inner self vulnerable.

But is the feeling, the perception reality? No!!!
(Jack M)

Action Point
The human experience is frequented by times as described above. This verse from Psalm 22 prophetically expresses Jesus' thoughts from the Cross.

We too wonder "Why"? We may even ask that of God. Some say it's wrong to ask that question. But in the real world most of us do ask that at some time in our lives. Many times it is just an attempt to understand.

The reality is that as believers we are never alone. God will never leave us. He has committed this promise to us and will never renege on it.

Why then the dry times, the desert experiences? This is a time to regroup, a time to recommit, a time to seek God, rather than run from Him.

Instead of running from God, run to Him. Invite Him into the situation. Pray. Read the Word of God. Worship. Confess aloud your belief in Him and your dependency on Him.

He does care. He will respond. He really is there, just as the verse above says. It's just that we rarely see the situation for what it is.

". . . because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you," Hebrews 13:5b (NIV). Good advice is, "Don't make any decisions about God and His purposes while you are in the desert place. If you do, you will almost always be wrong."

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Prepare for the dry times and dry places in the outdoors. Make sure you have ample water. Plan ahead of time by locating on maps the sources of water. Bring along some purifying tablets, or a filter for the water. At the least bring fire making equipment and boil the water to purify it before you drink it. Safe and pure water to drink can be a matter of death or life.

Today's Photograph . . . . You Will Get Out Of Your Walk In Christ What You Invest In It   (Jack M)
Bible Study Verse
Mark 13:35
"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back-whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn." (NIV)

Thoughts
Maintenance free house!! At least that seems to be what someone thought. If you look closely at this picture you will see that this house was built pretty well. The foundations seem to still be in pretty good shape. The floor line is straight and true. Even the roofline looks relatively good.
(Jack M)

Action Point
What happened to this place? What is the story? Did the owners die? Did she lose it in a financial reversal? Did old age overcome him till he could not care for it any longer?

The evident disrepair in this house can be a challenge to us:
  • Where am I spiritually?
  • Have I maintained my devotional life ?
  • Am I reading my Bible and praying every day?
  • Do I regularly attend a church where the Bible is clearly taught and people try to follow its guidelines?
  • Am I trying to maintain my spiritual house without any upkeep, input, investment or effort?
  • Do I think my spiritual house is maintenance free?

You will get out of your walk in Christ what you invest in it. That is an irrefutable law of the harvest. You will find returned more of the same that you planted.

Plant a healthy walk with the Lord. Put it in the schedule. Make the time. Maintain a strong walk with Christ.

One motivation t is that Jesus is coming again. Real soon!!!  Be ready!!! If you are not a believer, put your faith in Him today. If you are a believer, grow in that personal love relationship He invites you to enjoy and that He desires.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
It's deer season in most of North America. Make sure that your tree stands are in order. Check the bolts, tree spikes, supports, ladders, safety harnesses, and all that is involved in being safe. Maintain all the other needed equipment. Don't use another's stand without making sure of its safety and soundness. I learned that lesson the hard way. A stand broke, I fell, and I was blessed not to be paralyzed for life. My 8 day hospital stay reminded me of my negligence.

Today's Photograph . . . . Don't Be Like Me and Wait . . .  (Michael T)
Bible Study Verses
Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." (ESV)

Thoughts
Opening day of bow season in Michigan is October 1st. I sit here writing a devotional on opening day of bow season, and thinking about the fact that I haven't even practiced with my bow yet. I also realized that I have failed to check on my tree-stand and clean out some shooting lanes. I don't even know if my stand is still, well, standing.

I've done nothing to prepare for this hunting season, except to go out on the first day of the season and purchase my hunting license.
(Mike T)

Action Point
Life gets busy and sometimes it seems to pass us by. I just witnessed my oldest daughter go to her first school homecoming event with a date! (Even more reason to have been practicing.)

My children are growing up before my very eyes and I haven't done all of the things that I want to do with them. Before long they will all be out of the house and living out the adventure that God has called them to.

I can worry about them, or I can trust in Psalm 91:1-2 and know that those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. What a great promise!!!

Also, the Lord is coming back soon, so be prepared, and do the things that God has called you to do. Don't be like me and wait until the season starts to wait for Jesus to come back before you begin to worship, pray, love, serve, or sacrifice for our God who is our Almighty and All-Powerful King.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you are late in getting out to your tree-stand and you haven't had the opportunity to check it out to make sure it is still safe to use. Go out and buy a portable pop-up blind it will afford you a safer option and gives you more flexibility and mobility in moving closer to where the deer are walking this season.

Today's Photograph . . . . Hunters Are Passionate About Their Sport. Christians Should Be Passionate About The Love Of Jesus Christ And His Saving Message   (Cliff S)
Bible Study Verses
I Corinthians 2:1-5
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom.  For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.  And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling,  and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (ESV)

Thoughts
On any given Sunday, my wife can be seen waiting patiently for me in the church foyer, especially in the fall. Why does she wait? Well, it could be that I am still in conversation with one of my many hunting buddies who attend our church and are avid hunters.

Hunting stories have everything, comedy, drama, action, and the flair for the dramatic. It is easy and fun to share a hilarious hunting episode or an epic kill with a fellow hunter. It doesn't matter if you know the individual or not, he could be a complete stranger, but the story will still be told.
(Michael T)

Action Point
Hunters are passionate about their sport. Christians should be passionate about the love of Jesus Christ and his saving message. It is the most important story that everyone, who is lost, needs to hear. This message needs to be told.

The next time you are in a conversation with a fellow hunter or fisherman and you don't know whether or not he or she is a believer in Christ, do two things. First, insert a casual reference or question in regards to the beauty and intricate detail that God puts into his creation. Wait for a response and then come right back with a question about spiritual things. For example, "Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?" or "Do you go to church anywhere?" Don't forget to use scripture and to listen. The Holy Spirit will guide you the rest of the way.

The apostle Paul, evangelized with weakness, fear, and much trembling. Yet he did it, because he relied on the power of the Holy Spirit to work through him. Go out and make more disciples!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Invite a friend to go hunting or fishing with you, but keep him or her within your moral environment. A day of being together will open up many conversations where you can easily slip in a question about faith that will be the best sportsman's tip of the day he or she could ever hear.

Today's Photograph . . . . Sometimes We Need To Move On Out Of The Way (Michael T)
Bible Study Verses
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.  Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. (ESV)

Thoughts
On a recent family vacation to Yellowstone National Park we were able to enjoy the beauty and wonder of God's creation and the magnificence of His living creatures.  The children enjoyed looking out of the vehicle trying to spot a bison, a moose, a grizzly bear, a deer, or a monster elk.  Although we saw most of those animals, the bison was the most common sight, especially during the early evening hours in Hayden Valley.

It had been a long day of sight-seeing and it was time to head back to our lodge, situated just outside of the east entrance of the park.  The cars in front of us began to apply their brakes and came to a sudden stop. As we rounded the corner a long line of cars could be seen for a  mile.  However, the opposite lane was totally clear of traffic.  A half hour later we saw what was holding everybody up. A very large bison was fulfilling his dream of setting the pace as the Yellowstone pace car and beyond him was a herd of bison mingling in the road.
(Mike T)

Action Point
Aren't we sometimes like the bison? Have you ever been the "pace car" at church? Do you feel it is your obligation to monitor the growth or the spiritual direction of the church? Are you creating roadblocks or making sure things are moving slow?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, I would ask you to do what I told the big bison to do on that day.  "Get a move on big fella!" The same goes for us.  Sometimes we need to move on out of the way, so the leadership of the local church can continue to move forward as the Holy Spirit guides and directs them. It is our role to love and support those whom God has ordained.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Although the animals in national parks seem to be tame, they are not.  They are wild animals who have grown accustomed to traffic and vehicles.  But, on foot a person is in danger if they approach wildlife too closely.  Stay back.  That is why God allowed us to invent zoom lenses.

Today's Photograph . . . . You've Still Placed Yourself In A Dangerous Position . . . . Bear Track Out of Alaska   (Marshall M)
Bible Study Verse
Matthew 26:41
"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." (NIV)

Thoughts
My family and I were backpacking a stretch of trail where there had been problems with an "unfriendly bear". This black had been wreaking havoc at one particular campsite that we had been encouraged to forego staying at. However, due to an injury my wife sustained along the trail, we had to stop and stay.

Prior to us staying at this campsite, we had spoken with a group of guys who had also just stayed at this particular site the night before. They had experienced no problems. That was good news to hear!

When we arrived at the cove, I had everyone working on setting up camp. While they did this, I went down to the water's edge to refill our water bottles. As I walked down to the shore of Lake Superior, I discovered sizable tracks from a bear that had walked along the water's edge. Apparently, the bear had been there between the last group and our arrival, a difference of one to two hours.

Although the other group had not had a problem, my guard was back on high alert because of the tracks. So no one else would be scared, I erased the bear tracks in the wet sand with my own footprints. I didn't want anyone else to see what I had seen.
(Dave M)

Action Point
One of the greatest attacks on Christian men today occurs via the internet with pornographic sites. With just a few quick clicks of the key board, a fella can find himself viewing something that he was never supposed to see. The problem is that these images stick in the head and lead to games of the mind.

Someone who is trapped by this particular sin may be able to erase the tracks so that no one else knows where they've been on the computer. But, that doesn't mean you weren't there. You've still placed yourself in a dangerous position. You don't know what the consequences will be.

As food for thought, my kids later told me that they had seen the bear tracks too. They knew in spite of my cover up! Covering the tracks doesn't make it right; you've placed yourself and family in danger!!!

Read I Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it," (NIV). Next ask Him for forgiveness and wisdom in this area. Follow Romans 13:14, "Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature" (NIV). Seek Biblical counsel and prayer, and change your computer usage today.

Remember HE WILL HONOR your ODEDIENCE TO HIS WORD. Meditate on HIS WORD DAY AND NIGHT.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Satellite phones are a great way to have a connection to the "outside" world while you are deep in the wild. If you ever have a serious problem, it's an option for getting help.

Today's Photograph . . . . More Times Than Not, Your Life and Mine Is Simply Spent Scattering Seeds of Faith  (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Luke 8:15
But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.  (NASB)

Thoughts
Last year, I started leasing a new piece of property to hunt. My son and I spent hours upon hours out at the property trying to get it ready for the upcoming deer season. Part of the property had been clear-cut years before, so it was really thick. We had to:

  • Cut lanes to get in and out of various areas of the property.
  • Build a ground blind in one particular spot.
  • Hang tree stands in several locations for bow season.
  • Place our trail cams out to figure out travel patterns for the deer.
  • Place an old camper up at one spot on the property for us to be able to stay at, rather than running back and forth from home.

The neighbors were also clear cutting a section of woods. There was a lot of activity for one summer - probably too much for the property, actually.

Now that most of the work is already in place, we're looking forward to planting our food plots this year. Last year was a big learning year for us in just getting acclimated with the property, but we're hoping that the food plots that we plant this year will help.

We've been researching what plants grow best in certain soil conditions. It's all about the seeds that we plant as to how things turn out for us this upcoming fall.
(Dave M)

Action Point
Throughout our Christian lives, we should constantly be looking to plant seeds. Sometimes, you and I might get the opportunity to lead someone to Christ, but more times than not, your life and mine is simply spent scattering seeds of faith. As we live out our work days, as we travel to various places, and as we support our kids' programs/teams, we have the opportunity to rub shoulders with a lot of folks who need Jesus as Savior.

Be conscious of the great responsibility to plant seeds in other people's lives about Christ. We are to be His ambassadors to the world, and it happens one little seed at a time . . . maybe an encouraging word, maybe offering to pray for someone, maybe sharing a verse that means a lot to you, or maybe taking the time to listen to someone's problem. Whatever the situation, share your faith as God allows.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Whitetails can be pretty lazy. If you want to redirect their path, place a downed tree in their way to funnel them in a different direction. Often, if you cut a path in a thicket, the deer will follow the path of least resistance.

Today's Photograph . . . . Don't Assume That You Have Lots Of Time To Have This Conversation  (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
John 3:17
For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.  (NASB)

Thoughts
This Spring I've been hunting the late turkey season in Michigan with my kids. Due to our schedules with Spring sports, it's really our best option because it runs longer than the early season. It gives us a greater length of time to still get out and hunt, just catching bits and pieces of the season, which is the only way it really works for us right now.

The problem though was that our spring really came early this year, which launched the turkeys into mating season earlier as well. The normal routine of "calling in" the toms has been more difficult. The toms just don't seem to be interested at this point. It seems as though it's just too late for them.
(Dave M)

Action Point
Awhile back, I read a study that showed that the vast majority of Christians made a decision for Christ during their teen years. The study was emphasizing how important it is to reach kids for Christ during this phase of their life, which it is.

But, what about the older folks who still don't know Christ? A friend of mine came to know Christ when he was about 50. His wife had prayed for his salvation for approximately 20 years before he got saved. What a great day that was for their family when he came to know Christ as his savior!!!

If you've been praying for an older adult who doesn't know Christ yet, continue to do so. Don't be afraid to sit down and have a conversation with him or her about their eternal salvation.

Another friend of mine asked me recently when I had another devotional coming on Sportsmen's Devotional. Before the next one came out, he had passed away suddenly. Don't assume that you have lots of time to have this conversation. My friend's passing took us all by surprise. Fortunately, he was a Godly man and knew his eternity would be spent in heaven.

Your friend might be in the "late season" of his or her life, but make every effort to share your faith and allow them the opportunity to respond and pray!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Owl calls or hawk calls really do work very nicely to find the turkeys. Give out a call and intently listen to see if you can hear a gobble.

Today's Photograph . . . . Sharing The Gospel and The Good News With Those Who Need Hope  (PC GC CA)
Bible Study Verses
Philipians 3:20-22
But our citizenship is in Heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body.(NIV)

Thoughts
Recently, we were finishing up a backpacking trip at Pukaskwa National Park in Canada along the shores of Lake Superior. It's a beautiful place with a rugged coastline and some pretty spectacular views.

As we neared the end of our trip, one of my younger daughters said to me, "I want to go home, but I don't want to leave this place either."  Her comment struck me as one that many of us as Christians think but never say in regards to our spiritual home - Heaven.  I want to go there, but I don't really want to leave . . .

We are only here for a short time. We've been given a mission:  go and make disciples.

I'm not sure of your experience as a believer, but ever since accepting Christ as my Savior, this has been much of my life's mission:  sharing the gospel and the good news with those who need hope.

Sometimes, I find myself so focused on the here and now and trying to reach others, that I lose sight of the fact that this is not my home. There is an eternal destiny that I am headed towards, Heaven.
(Dave M)

Action Point
God has certainly given us a commission with our time here on this Earth, but we are not to lose sight of the fact that our time will continue on in Heaven with Him. As much as we love and appreciate the kingdom that God has created and left for us to operate in, we must keep in mind that our destiny lies before us.

I truly believe that we have only been given a glimpse through scripture of what Heaven is going to be like. If we really knew what Heaven was like, I believe it would be much easier for us to "long" for our eternal home.

So, press on in the faith today . . . keep making a difference and reaching out to those you come into contact with, but remember - this place is not your home!!!

God has a plan and a place for you in the future, and it'll be beyond our comprehension! Spend some time today searching the scriptures on Heaven.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Most accidents in hunting from a hanging tree stand occur in the last step getting into the blind or the first step getting out. Make sure to be conscious of this. If you place your tree pegs in a manner where you are stepping down into the blind, rather than stepping up, it'll make your transition into the blind much easier!!!

Today's Photograph . . . . Mission in Chopping   (Tom B)
Bible Study Verses
Acts 18:2-3
There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. (NIV)

Thoughts
The above scripture tells us about Paul's visit to Corinth, visiting Jewish believers, telling them about Jesus Christ. One couple he met and stayed with was Aquila and Priscilla. I have read these two verses many times in the past, but this time, "and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they were working, for by trade they were tent-makers," jumped out at me!

Think about it-what a neat picture. We see Paul's human side, Aquila and Paul, out in the shop, sewing cloths of fabric together, making tents. I bet Priscilla every so often came out and brought drinks and snacks. I bet they shared stories, many about Jesus Christ.

Paul had to share his "knocked off the donkey" conversion. What a great story that would have been. I can just imagine the excitement in Paul's voice as he shared that event. Paul was a human being. I sure would have liked to have been there ease dropping on their conversation, maybe even learning how to put together a tent.

Action Point
We all know that taking someone else fishing or hunting, who might not be a believer in Jesus Christ, can be a great witnessing tool. But what about sharing the workload of a friend that is not connected to fishing or hunting? We, who love to fish and hunt, are all "Missionary Fishermen and Hunters." We have no problem telling someone about what happened on our last trip afield or afloat.

But, what about rolling up your sleeves, getting your hands dirty, helping a friend or neighbor with yard work, home maintenance, maybe helping fix their car or truck? I used to have a friend that he and I spent many a Saturday morning repairing each other's car.

"He stayed with them and they were working, for by trade they were tent-makers." Probably most of us are not tent-makers, but we do have skills that we can share with others. Along the way, as the relationship deepens, you might even be able to share Jesus to them. By working alongside of them, you are already sharing one of Jesus' commands:  Love one Another.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Many organizations have projects that need volunteers to help out in, such as Habitat for Humanity. Maybe your church has a program where members lend their skills to community neighbors who need help. Get involved when the opportunities arise. Don't be just a "Missionary Fisherman or Hunter."

Today's Photograph . . . . They Lived A "Nothing" Life and Became "Nothings" - Just Like The Pagan Peoples All Around Them   (Tom B).
Bible Study Verse
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. (NIV)

Thoughts
Somebody is always coming up with a new lure design, a different rigging for a bait or lure, a better fishing reel, tougher line, or better fishing electronics. . . something to make catching fish easier.

The latest new rigging touted to catch more largemouth bass is the "Umbrella Rig," although I understand anglers on the East coast have been using a variation of the Umbrellas to catch stripers for a long time.

Several years ago a bass angler introduced me to his latest lure creation. He had taken a buzz bait, removed the skirt and hook, and then added a Rat L Trap to where the original buzz bait skirt and hook were located.

Did it catch fish? I don't know. I have yet to get it wet. He swore it was great bass catcher.

Probably the number one reason I never tried it was because I was catching bass regularly with my tried and true lures. Why spend time trying something new when the present lures are working great.
(Tom B)

Action Point
Conform to the latest trend, or stick with what you know is true?

Exodus 23:2a says, "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong," (NIV). Deuteronomy 12:30 says, "And after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, "How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same," (NIV).

I really like the Message's translation of II Kings 17:14-15, "But they wouldn't listen. If anything, they were even more bullheaded than their stubborn ancestors, if that's possible. They were contemptuous of His instructions, the solemn and holy covenant He had made with their ancestors, and of His repeated reminders and warnings. They lived a "nothing" life and became "nothings"-just like the pagan peoples all around them. They were well-warned: God said, 'Don't!' but they did it anyway," (MSG).

Remember the laws of God, the Ten Commandments. Don't add to them; don't delete anything from them; and don't reinterpret them to fit the changing world we live in.

What about fishing lures . . . conform or try some new idea or bait? Try them out and see if they catch fish, as long as they don't break the laws of your state or country. Don't break established laws.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Some recent tips anglers have posted on different internet forums for modifying buzz baits:
  • Remove the blade of the buzz bait and open the top and bottom holes using a square-tipped nail. This gives the blade a little more room to wobble and also gives the holes a square shape for more clicking sound.
  • Drill a 1/8" hole on each flap of the blade to add some bubbles during the retrieve.
  • Use a red permanent marker to add a bleeding effect to the skirt and edges of buzz bait blade.

Today's Photograph . . . . Pray, Have Others Pray . . .   (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
II Corinthians 1: 10-11
He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us again. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. (NIV)

Thoughts
It's summer and fire season again. This year it has become personal. Our son who lives in Colorado Springs called last night and said that the growing wildfires burning in the area are approaching the area in the foothills where he and his family lives. Fortunately, he and his family are in Missouri on a vacation trip, but the destruction of their home might be imminent.

As I listened to his recount of what is being relayed to him from neighbors and friends in Colorado Springs, my heart goes out to him as I can hear the fear and helplessness in his voice.
(Tom B)

Action Point
What can one do when faced with a similar situation?

Listen . . . let them talk. Cry and laugh with them. Remember who our powerful heavenly Father is, and what He can do. Gently let them know He is there; He sees what's going on.

"He has delivered us from such a deadly peril," in the past, "and He will deliver us again." Maybe the deliverance outcome may not be exactly what we desire, but remember He knows what the big picture is.

I know in my life, in retrospective, I can see where God has been in control. His results have been better than what I could have conceived. Share the stories, recall the Scripture verses that God gave you to sustain you through the hard times.

Pray, have others pray . . . "On him we have set our hope that He will deliver us as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many."

God still does miracles, and as in our son's situation, the fires might not touch his and his neighbor's homes.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
On a camping trip, always make sure when you leave the campfire is completely out. The best way is to pour water on the embers, stir the ashes, and then douse again.

Today's Photograph . . . . Bragging Rights    (Tom B)
Bible Study Verse
Luke 5:14
Then Jesus ordered him, "Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." (NIV)

Thoughts
I received the following email from one of the fishing guides I stay in touch with.

"Today I had some buddies out for a relaxing time fishing. I told the guys that we needed 25 fish, and that number 25 would also be number 7,000 for the year from my boat." The guide I am quoting is a crappie and catfish guide.

"I told Ronny to let me know when we caught number 24, so I could quit fishing and get a picture of who ever caught number 7,000. Well, it did not happen the way I had planned. Howard hooked into a fish and he put it in the boat, making that one 24. So, just as I go to reel my line in, BAM, guess who has number 7,000 on their line? Yep-it's me. The only picture taken today was of me holding fish number 7,000 for the year."

In Luke 5:14 Jesus healed a man with leprosy. His instructions, "Don't tell anyone..." goes against the grain of human nature. When something great happens we want to tell someone about it. When you bag number 7,000 for the year, right at the top of your to-do list is to brag about the accomplishment.

Why didn't Jesus want the news of the healing to get out? Wouldn't the healing be a great testimony of his power, his relationship with God?
(Tom B)

Action Point
I don't think Jesus wants to draw people to Him just because He can heal the sick. He wants people to recognize that He is the Son of God, that He forgives people of their sins. He healed physical sicknesses, raised people from the dead because of His compassion for them.

Is it wrong to brag about your successes afloat or afield?

Certainly not. It becomes wrong if success gives us an inflated ego-pride. In the email above, the guide was expecting one of the other anglers to boat number 7,000. It didn't matter to him who caught the fish. He probably would have been happier if one of the other anglers caught it.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A measure of success for a fishing guide is not how great the number of pictures on his or her website. Find out how long they have been guiding. What's their staying power? Repeat business is a better indication of how good they are in their business rather than pictures of their catches.

Today's Photograph . . . . "Lots"--Lots of Walking, Lots of Sitting, and Lots of Glassing for These Elusive Animals   (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (NIV)

Thoughts
A friend of mine, a special hunting buddy, was coming in from a day in the field. We were mule deer hunting, and those days can be very long and full of "lots"--lots of walking, lots of sitting, and lots of glassing for these elusive animals. I asked him if he'd seen anything, and he said, "I almost saw a big one."

"Where," I asked.

"I think he was just over that furthest point," he replied.

We both had a good laugh and ate our dinner anticipating another good time in the field the next day.

When I think about that little exchange, it actually says a lot. The hidden meaning is: I still believed that there was a buck out there, that I could find him, and successfully stalk and kill him. It said that I still had unconditional hope; and that unconditional hope is what got me out of bed the next day to go hike those mountains again. If I didn't have unconditional hope, I'd probably just sleep in.
(Cliff S)

Action Point
The word "unconditional" gets used a lot in our society. Unconditional love, unconditional obedience, unconditional acceptance. But, have you ever thought about your faith in Christ being unconditional.

I'll believe in God if He heals my back pain. I'll believe in God if He sends me a great job and makes me rich. I'll believe in God if He does some miracle, whatever it is that I demand. Well, here's a news flash. Faith is unconditional, just as God's love is for us. If God has to do stuff for you to believe in Him, it'll never happen. After He's done whatever it is, you'll just figure out something else that He has to do to prove to you that He is who He says He is--the God of the universe. Jesus Himself actually told some folks in the Bible that even if they saw a miracle that they wouldn't believe, and they didn't.

Here's the deal: faith just is!!! It is based on what we read in the Bible about God and His son, Jesus. And, our faith grows when we get into the Word, the Bible, and read, study, and meditate about God. When you do, you'll find out that He's already done everything that He needs to do for you to place your faith in Him. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for us, and then He raised Jesus from the grave. Because of that empty grave, I have faith in Him!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Keep getting up early and getting out there. The animals you pursue are out there for you to find, but it's not going to happen if all you do is sit around in camp all day. You have to go where the animals are.

Today's Photograph . . . . When You Choose The Way You're Going To Follow, Be Sure You Opt For The Truth   (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
John 14:5-6
Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (NIV)

Thoughts
Now, if you're like I am, when you reach into your gun vault to select a firearm for a hunt, you probably have a few choices. We all have our favorites.

For medium-sized animals like deer, some choose the .270, others the .30-06, still others may prefer a .243 or a .308.

For larger game such as elk, many of my friends favor a 7mm Magnum; I like my .300 Winchester Magnum.

A lot of the choice has to do with what you will be hunting, where you're going, so to speak.

Any one of these guns will kill anything I hunt, but where's the fun in owning only one gun!
(Cliff S)

Action Point
The point is, in many areas of our lives, like hunting or shooting, we have choices. But, in our spiritual lives, there is only one choice--to accept Jesus or not. If I want to go where Jesus is, I have to go through Jesus, Himself.

The Bible warns us that false teachers will come and will lead many people away from the truth of Jesus. These false teachers are identified as being agents of Satan. Satan is described as being a liar. So, to whom are you going to listen--the agent of the truth, Jesus, or the agent of lies, Satan?

When you choose the way you're going to follow, be sure you opt for the Truth!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you're going to take more than one caliber of firearm on a hunt, be sure you clearly label the ammunition so it doesn't get mixed up. I like to keep my primary firearm's ammunition out where it's handy and wrap the different caliber of ammunition in plastic wrap so they don't get mixed..

Today's Photograph . . . . Let Us Be Imitators Of Christ, All Facets Of Him!!!   (FWS)
Bible Study Verses
Ephesians 5:1-2
Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (NIV)

Thoughts
There's a special place in Alaska called Anan Creek Trail. The trail follows a creek that empties into the ocean. A short way up the creek, about a half-mile or so, there's a bear viewing area. The creek falls through a narrow gorge where the salmon are jumping up the water covered rock face on their spawning run. The bears gather and gorge themselves on the salmon.

It was a real treat to be so close to the bears, both on the open trail and in the enclosed viewing area, and watch their fishing skills, or lack thereof. The old pros had their favorite spots and techniques. The cubs thrashed about in their attempts to imitate their mothers. Sooner or later, they all had fish for supper; it just took some a little longer than others to figure things out.

When it was all said and done, it wasn't too different from watching a father or mother teach their child how to bait a hook, cast, retrieve the lure, and catch a fish. The cubs imitate their mothers, the children their parents.
(Cliff S)

Action Point
This verse tells us to be imitators of Christ--to try our best to be like Him. However, most of the time we only acknowledge one side of Christ, the side where He's sitting with a child on His lap or holding a helpless lamb.

We forget about Christ's tough side. We overlook the accounts in Mark and the other Gospels about Christ in the wilderness telling Satan to beat it, or driving the money changers out of the Temple with a whip. We fail to notice that Christ never backed down from a fight, so to speak, when He observed injustice.

Consider how He addressed the Pharisees when they criticized Him for healing a man on the Sabbath. He made it clear that their lack of compassion was wrong, and He made sure that they knew it!

Yes, Jesus had a soft side, a side of compassion and mercy, but He also was a warrior fighting for the Kingdom of His Father. And, remember, when Jesus returns, He's coming back as the warrior that will destroy all of the forces of evil!

It seems to me that it's important for us to imitate Christ's compassion, but it's also ready to fight for the Kingdom. Therefore, let us be imitators of Christ, all facets of Him!!!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When fishing or hunting, pay attention to the old guys that have been out there all of their lives. If we look and listen more and talk less, we can learn a lot about how to catch those fish or bag that buck.

Today's Photograph . . . . "Snakes" or Temptations Around Us Daily, Arizona Diamondback  (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Hebrews 12:7-11
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as His children. For what children are not disciplined by their Father? If you are not disciplined-and everyone undergoes discipline-then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human Fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (NIV)

Thoughts
Where I hunt in Arizona it is likely that a hunter and his bird dog will encounter rattlesnakes. You all know how much I like snakes (there's no such thing as a good snake, not even a dead one).

A couple years back I was able to watch a dog trainer "snake train" a hunting dog, in this case a Brittany Spaniel. He had caught a rattler, defanged the snake, and used it to train the dog. A snake has an attractive odor to a dog and they are curious about the noise the snake makes. Couple this with the dog running hard and getting on a snake before he knows it is there and you may have to make a fast trip to the local veterinarian.

Anyway, the trainer put the snake out on the bare ground then brought the dog to the snake. The dog, like most, showed an interest and finally succumbed to the temptation to get close to the snake. When the snake struck at the dog the trainer lit him up with a shocking collar.

In this case, the dog did not need a second lesson. When the trainer brought him to the snake again the dog tried to drag the trainer into the next county. The training wasn't pleasant for the dog, but it worked and it just might save his life some day.
(Cliff S)

Action Point
We all have "snakes" or temptations around us daily. Some we see plainly, some are subtle and sneak up on us. God uses discipline and training to make us aware when danger lurks nearby and, if we give in to the temptation, He just might "light us up" in one way or another to teach us to avoid the temptation in the future.

Yes, there are consequences for sin. Just like the rattlesnake can kill a dog with its bite, sin can kill us. The Bible has examples where people literally died physically because of sin. But, more importantly, sin can cause us to die spiritually.

God wants to be in fellowship with us but our sin stands between us and Him. Faith in Jesus covers our sin but sometimes we are prone to forget and get a little too close to the "snake" and God has to remind us to stay close to Him and avoid the "bite".  But, remember, God disciplines us for our good. Just like the trainer teaches the dog to avoid the danger of the rattlesnake, so God trains us to avoid the danger of the "snakes" around us.

Sportsman's Tip of the Day
Most dogs need an annual refresher course in avoiding snakes, just as they do annual medical boosters. Find a trainer in your area that provides snake training and pay the fee to have it done. It just might save your dog from a fatal snake bite.

Today's Photograph. . . .Merriam's Tom (Wayne Morris)
Bible Study Verse
Luke 12:2-3
There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. (NIV)

Thoughts
Up early.  "O-dark-thirty" as the military might say.  Rolling out instead of rolling over.  Up with the chickens.  All of these speak of arising early and arriving before daylight at our stands or favorite place to hunt or to fish.  We hunters use the cover of darkness to defeat the amazing eyes of our prey.

I love hunting turkeys.  They do not see well in the dark or even in the dim light conditions of very early morning.  So we get to our chosen location, set up our blinds, and put out our decoys before the birds can see us.  Then we call them in.  Darkness hides us and the birds dismiss and forget our noise in setting up.  So it is to our advantage to use the darkness to hide us and our ambush.
(Jackie M)

Action
Many people believe that what they do in the darkness will never be discovered.   "What happens in _________ stays in __________" is the Devil's deceitful lie.

There is a God who sees it all and who knows everything, even the motives of our hearts. We are accountable to Him for every word, every thought, every action, and even our desires.

Those in Christ, whose sin is forgiven, whose guilt is washed away, who are declared right by the Judge of the Whole Earth will never suffer shame for these things. Why? Because their sins have been washed, they have been made clean in the blood of Jesus Christ, the Savior.

Have you received Him and the forgiveness of your sin offered in His sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection? If not, please call out to Him for that forgiveness and live the abundant life He provides for all who will receive Him.

Sportsmen's Tip Of The Day
To calling in turkeys . . . beforehand practice, practice, practice!

Today's Photograph. . . . If We Depend On The Lord, We Will Find The Bedrock   (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 69:2
Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can't find a foothold.  I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me. (NLT)

Thoughts
The crossing of the small stream was routine.  I had hunted these woods, making the same push many times. It was frozen over some years.  But, usually all I had to do was find a place the deer crossed and I could make the crossing just fine.  I had thought of using a pole to help stabilize me during the crossing, but when none was readily at hand I gave up on the idea.

So I ventured out with nothing to stabilize me; nothing to lean on.  This time my left boot became mired down in the mucky, muddy bottom.  I fell.  My one boot filled with water, my clothing became wet, and water quickly turned to ice on the shotgun.  When I was able to get up and out on the other side, I was faced with cleaning myself and making sure my weapon was not full of ice, mud, or snow.

My hands became so cold during this recovery effort that they hurt.  I am sure it would have made a comical video.   The experience itself was such a challenge that I ended my hunt early.
(Jackie M)

Action
The situations and circumstances of life can mire us down, catch us off guard, and derail us from the important and meaningful things we should do.  A foothold or stepping stone is important.

This solid foundation is found in Jesus Christ alone.  On our own, the mud will entrap us. the waters overwhelm us, and even drown us.  But, if we depend on the Lord, we can find the bedrock of certainty and substance that will never disappoint or let us down.  Matthew 7:24-25 reflects, "Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock," (NLT).

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Choose places to cross streams very carefully.  Use a pole or a long strong stick to give you support and stability.  Carry extra dry socks in case the water enters your boots so you can change into dry socks.  Also make sure to clear the weapon of ice, debris, mud, or snow before you fire it.
