Today's Photograph . . . . Alaskan Landscape (Cliff S)
Bible Study Verses
Daniel 3:28-29
Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way." (NIV)

Thoughts
I love to fly, whether I'm at the controls or a professional. My pilot's license allows me to fly single-engine fixed-wing aircraft. Don't ask me about the time I got to fly a 747 Simulator, it wasn't pretty. Crash and burn, baby! Maybe I'll leave flying the big planes to the pros!

On a fishing trip to Alaska I was constantly amazed at the sights from the window. Now, think with me. We're in a metal tube at 35,000 feet above the earth doing something that humans aren't supposed to be able to do, fly. We put our trust in the machine, the pilots, and the maintenance people that take care of that plane.

The views are awe inspiring. I never get tired of looking at the tops of clouds. There are peaks and valleys and you can see where the wind currents have cut channels through them. When we enter those clouds, we can't see anything and sometimes the ride gets a little turbulent.

Again, we have to trust the pilots and the machine. We don't even ask about the qualifications of either. We just assume that they will safely take us through the rough stuff. Talk about faith, it doesn't get any deeper than that. Right?
(Cliff S)

Action Point
When we walk with God, we have to put our faith and trust in Him and His Holy Spirit, always. There are going to be times when we can't see where He's taking us and times when the ride will get rough. Those are times when, like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, our faith will be tested. It may be when you get a bad report from the doctor, when something goes terribly wrong on a hunt and your very survival is uncertain, or when God has allowed you to prosper to see how you will handle what He's given you. There's a saying, "Character is tested when you're up against it". Well, guess what, God tests us. He's watching to see how we react to adversity, to see what kind of character we possess, and to see if we really trust Him.

The founder of this website, Sportsmen's Devotional, always signs his letters with the acronym, "WIHP". The letters stand for "Walk In His Paths. Good advice when the road gets hard to see and maybe a little bumpy! Trust God that He will lead you through the rough stuff!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When booking with a guide, always check his references and those of his associates. You want to be sure that he will be able to get you there and back safely and hopefully put you onto the animals you're hunting.

Today's Photograph . . . . Petroglyphs (Wes W)
Bible Study Verse
I Kings 3:14
"And if you stay on course, keeping your eye on the life-map and the God-signs as your father David did, I'll also give you a long life." (Message

Thoughts
The above desert bighorn sheep petroglyph is high on a mountain by some natural water collecting rock holes, similar to a bath tub. I just reasoned from those long ago signs that some Indian while waiting to ambush supper when the sheep came to water, would hide under cover while drawing on the rocks. I put that in my memory bank in case I ever want to hunt one. Thanks for the sign fellow hunter.
(Wes W)

Action Point
This was God's promise to Solomon. Instead of asking God for riches, honor, and long life, he asked for a discerning and God-listening heart. Now as a man a few thousand years later I can grasp that, reason it, and apply it to my life today. I will follow the God-signs.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Signs are all around us, buck rubs, tracks in the dirt, arrow heads, claw marks on trees, petroglyphs, ruins, wallows, signs of a past forest fire, and signs of the past flood. Keep your eye on the signs.

Today's Photograph . . . . God Will Bless Honesty. Telling Tall Tales Is Lying, And Your Sin Will Find You Out (Ruben C)
Bible Study Verses
Acts 4:36-37
Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means "son of encouragement"), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet. (NIV)

Acts 5:1-5
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet. Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?  Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God." When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. (NIV)

Thoughts
This last deer season I shot a nice muley buck. He was big! His brow tines alone were over 6" long! I made a long shot on him too. It was about 360 yards. I tracked him for what seemed forever before I made that amazing shot.

Okay, the whole truth is, I did indeed shot a muley buck. He had about 8"spikes, and the shot I made was only 80 yards. I shot him 360 yards from where I parked my truck though, and I did actually track him. The shortest tracking of an animal I ever did.
(Ruben C)

Action Point
The first part of my story leads you to believe I probably shot a trophy muley t at 360 yards that was so big he had 6" brow tines. And all that after I tracked him for miles probably. We can embellish the truth to the point that we're pretty much lying. We hear impressive hunting stories and we want ours to stack up too.

Ananias kind of did that. He probably heard about Joseph the Levite selling a field and putting his money at the apostles feet, so he and Sapphira wanted to look good too. They should have been honest though.

God will bless honesty. Telling tall tales is lying, and your sin will find you out (Num 32:23).

Hunting my little buck was fun and the real story was entertaining- no embellishment needed! Remember that men, next time you share a big buck or big fish story, you'll be respected all the more for it!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
It's all in the posing. I've seen some of the nicest trophies photographed in such disarray as to make the viewer wonder, "Why bother?" Remember to put the tongue in the mouth (the animals!), wipe away excess blood and move away from blood on the ground if possible. I forgot my camera and took this picture with my smart phone propped up on my hunting pack. I love to honor even seemingly insignificant hunts with a good picture. This hunt was done with a special rifle on my only day to hunt. It will bring back memories for a lifetime.

Today's Photograph . . . . God Designed And Created You For A Life Of Purpose (Rebecca L)
Bible Study Verse
I John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV)

Thoughts
One of our favorite wintertime activities is cross country skiing as a family. If you stay inside for too long in the winter months, a person can go buggy.

Cross country provides us a cheap outlet to get out of the house and get a breath of fresh air. For us to do this, my wife and I have had to teach each of the kids how to ski.

Cross country isn't hard once you get a little experience under your belt, but those first few lessons reinforce how easy it is to slip and fall. All it takes is being off balance a little bit and down you go.

The important part of this learning curve is, "How do I get back up?" So a quick lesson ensues getting your skis parallel while you are laying down on your side, and then using your poles to help push yourself back up. It's a simple lesson. If you don't get back up, you won't ever reach your destination.
(Dave M)
Action Point
Spiritually, everyone falls down. The key is to get back up.

God designed and created you for a life of purpose.

The enemy, Satan, wants to keep you down and beat up. That way you are ineffective for the kingdom of God.

Sin isn't good, but when you fall, go straight to God, ask for forgiveness, and get back up. God's forgiveness is quick and complete - accept it and learn from your mistake(s).
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
For those of you who live in a snowy climate, buy a roof rake to get the snow off your rooftops. Don't go up on your roof to shovel it off - you're inviting trouble. You do have to get the snow off though or you are looking at too much weight on the roof and potential leak problems with the ice backing up.

Today's Photograph . . . . To Not Heed The Warning Signs Could Be Very Foolish And Even Deadly  (Tom H)
Bible Study Verse
Matthew 24:42
"Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming." (NASB)

Thoughts
If you have ever hiked into the Grand Canyon, you may have seen the warning sign above that advises you not to try to hike in and out of the canyon on the same day. Many people have ignored that sign and paid a price for it.

As I mentioned in a previous devotion, our family saw first-hand how unforgiving the canyon can be as a victim was flown out by way of a cargo net in a body bag.
(Tom H)

Action Point
You have to be almost blind not to see the daily warning signs in the news that some major event is about to happen. I am not going to predict anything; but I know that this is a very good time to draw close to the Lord. To not heed the warning signs could be very foolish and even deadly!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
I have a large ziplock bag in my closet ready to go anytime we want to take a hike or spur-of-the-moment trip into the wilderness. It has basic survival tools that doesn't add much weight, but can be lifesavers, should something unforeseen happen.

Today's Photograph . . . . It Is Always Because I Have Left The Safety Of The Lord  (MQ?)
Bible Study Verse
Psalm 63:1
O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns  for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (NASB)

Thoughts
Most of my adult life has been spent in desert environs in a land where there is no water. This was not always the case. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania where there is an abundance of water. There were so many good fishing spots that your biggest problem was deciding which lake or stream or river to go to!

I can remember so vividly the first trip back home after living for many years in the desert. Green! You just wanted to try and drink in all the green! It felt so good to the eyes just to see all that luscious green.

Much of the Middle East and of course Israel is a dry and weary land where there is no water. David was thoroughly familiar with these barren spaces and how they can zap the soul right out of you. He had no air conditioning, no refrigerator to go get a cold glass of water from and no ice cubes! He really understood thirst when he said, "My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you."
(Dave H)

Action Point
Have you ever felt the way David did? How you almost feel physically weak and sick because of the need for God in your life? You feel like you are lost in a desert with no water, wandering aimlessly, and trying to find something to drink before you expire. The sun is beating down on you with no relief, no shade, and no shelter.

I have been in the literal desert extremely hot and thirsty. I have also been in that dry and weary spiritual place. In the latter case, it is always because I have left the safety of the Lord, never because He has left me.

Run after the Lord! Drink Him in like a glass of refreshing water. Taste and see that He is good!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When doing your dishes while out camping or hunting, add a few drops of Clorox to your rinse water. This will kill most of the parasites that cause "the runs." After washing, just soak your dishes in the rinse water, dry, and put away. No one ever wants that kind of a problem and especially not on an outdoor outing!

Today's Photograph . . . . Turning The Herd (LP)
Bible Study Verse
Ezekiel 33:19
And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so. (NIV)

Thoughts
Trying to turn a herd of buffalo can be a tough job. When buffalo get it in their heads that they want to go a certain direction and you want them to go elsewhere, they usually end up going their way. If by chance you can get ahead of them and turn the lead cow, the rest of the herd will usually follow. However, it is important to take a fast and trustworthy horse along with you. (Ron T)

Action Point
If we are not on God's path, He wants us to turn, do a complete 180 degree pivot and get on His path. Through His forgiveness, none of the sins we committed while going the wrong way will be remembered, Ezekiel 33:16. As a matter of fact, the sins we committed are removed as far as the east is from the west, Psalms 103:12. That's a long way.

I have heard people say that they can forgive, but they won't forget. I might have even said it myself a time or two. I'm so glad that when God forgives my sins, He also forgets them. If we ask Him about the sins we have committed in the past, He will say "What sins?"

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If in the future, you are planning a horseback ride, make sure to check your tack before you hit the trail. I have seen some pretty nasty horse wrecks caused by bad stirrup leathers or worn-out latigos. Replacement of bad parts before the ride can help keep horse and rider safe.

Today's Photograph . . . . Chickens - 1, Coyotes - 0  (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
1 Thessalonians 5:1
Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you. (NIV)

Thoughts
A few weeks ago I was at the hitch rail outside our tack room trimming the feet on my daughter's horse. My wife and daughter were standing nearby inspecting one of our other horses when we heard a bunch of our chickens raise a commotion from within our horse corrals just out of view behind our feed shed.

All of a sudden a flock of chickens came running (for their lives apparently) toward us and right in the middle of them was a coyote! He caught a chicken not 20 feet from me and ran off as I yelled, "Coyote!" unnecessarily. It apparently scared the coyote into dropping the *chicken.

He ran away as I ran into our house for a small caliber rifle then ran outside again with my oldest daughter in chase to see him sitting in the desert about 80 yards away looking somewhat disappointed. I took a knee as he got up to run and I let him have it. He had his last chance at a meal, ever.
SCORE: Chickens- 1, Coyotes- 0
(Ruben C)

Action Point
This little adventure happened at about 3 pm on a nice sunny day. Who would've thought? I always assumed the coyotes preferred to come in for their thievery at night, but lesson learned.

I have heard many people theorize on the end of the world and the coming of Christ. It hasn't happened yet! But, I'm sure it will, just as I'm sure I do not know when that day will be.

The scriptures tell us to be awake and sober and wear our salvation as a helmet Read 1 Thessalonians  5. We need to be prepared in day and night for the coming of the Lord or possibly most likely us going to meet the Lord.

We may not have the advantage of knowing when that moment will be and we do not need to pack for the trip, but we need to be right with the Lord at all times as it's not a one-time situation, although it is a one-time promise, amen?

I had a rifle prepared that day in case a coyote came calling at any time. Am I prepared for the Lord the same way? How about you?

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Calling and shooting coyotes is exciting fun for anyone to enjoy. In southern Arizona I have found the early mornings the best for using both rabbit distress calls and howlers. Electronics are also fun, but there's a certain satisfaction in fooling a dog with a mouth call! Either way, both are fun.

*no chickens were injured in the making of this adventure

Today's Photograph . . . . Gambel Quail (NPS)
Bible Study Verse
Mark 14:72
Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept. (NIV)

Thoughts
To me there is no sound like that of a an elk bugling. In the wild, it gives me goose bumps. When I am on a stalk and the bulls are bugling, my adrenaline flows.
When I am quail hunting and the I hear the call of Gambel quail up ahead it has the same effect.
When I was dating my now wonderful bride of 21 years and she would call me on the phone, I would get butterflies when I heard her voice. The same still happens sometimes today, praise God!
(Ruben C)
Action Point
There are sounds, and things not necessarily sounds that that do not bring healthy feelings of joy or excitement, but are instead signs of unhealthy behavior. I can have a tendency to be critical toward other people. When I am critical, I can also be negative (that's the second rooster crow for me). Then I can be in definite sin and denying the love Jesus commands us to have for our brothers, sisters and neighbors (I am disowning Jesus).
Acts 4:10-12, "Then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is 'the Stone you builders rejected, which has become the Cornerstone.' Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved," (NIV).
Take encouragement from this passage friends. The same Peter from Mark 14 above who denied Jesus is the same one who spoke these words about our Savior in Acts 4, "...but whom God raised from the dead..." Peter knew the truth, persevered and became bold in his faith instead of staying discouraged and quitting.
We have salvation only through the Christ that was raised from the dead as we too can be raised from our sinful selves.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Calling quail can be effective for locating them in the field. A novice like me likes to call back them to after I bust a covey, and I've found they'll hold in the area a little longer. I recently found a link to making a simple clothes pin quail call. It can be a fun project for you and your younger hunting partners.

Today's Photograph . . . . Every Person Chained To The Addictive Sin Of Pornography Is A Person Jesus Loves  (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Judges 13:25
And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Judges 14:19
Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father's house.

Judges 16:20
And she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" So he awoke from his sleep, and said, "I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!" But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him. (NKJV)

Thoughts
What went wrong? This magnificent buck was coming in like he was on a string. But suddenly, he looked directly in my direction, spun like a top and sprinted away! I was hugely disappointed. Everything seemed to be just right, but the outcome was deeply disappointing. It was the wind that carried my scent and alerted the deer. I did not realize it until too late!!!
(Jack M)
Action Point
Samson was the world's strongest man! The scriptures confirm it. His feats are listed all through Judges 14-16. The speed at which he moved and the raw power of his body were amazing and supernatural. But Samson thought too highly of himself. Pride got in the way. He let his physical appetites control his life. He forgot that his strength came from God. His failure reminded him of his true source of strength.
Our failures and our struggles should remind us that we are dependent upon God. It is the Holy Spirit of God who gives us the desire and the dynamic power to do the will of God. Read Philippians2:13.

If you sense something is wrong in life, remember that you were created for a special love relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. If you have not received Him as Lord, do so. If you have gotten away from that relationship, repent and return to Him. Accept the forgiveness He offers, and enjoy again the presence and the power of the Almighty.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
The statistics below are from  xxxChurch.com:
  • 40 million adults visit pornographic websites on a daily basis
  • 25% of all employees who use the internet look at porn
  • 50% of divorces in America list porn use as a contributing factor
  • 11 million Americans battle sexual addiction
  • $3 billion is generated annually just by child pornography
First symptom is denial!!!

Today's Photograph . . . . He Alone Is Able To Bring Us Through The Storm To Safety  (MQ)
Bible Study Verse
Jeremiah 10:13
When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, and brings out the wind from His storehouses. (NASB)

Thoughts
One night high in the mountains, my husband and I were camped out in our cozy two-man tent. It was the night before his bull elk hunt, and there was a great sense of excitement and anticipation in the air.

There was also a powerful storm moving in, and it was quite apparent that we needed to seek shelter in our little tent and wait out the impending downpour. The storm came quickly and the rain was so loud that we shouted to get our voices to carry over its roar.

More impressive than the power of the rain was the lightning - cracking and popping with no distinction between lightning strike and thunder. Searching for some courage, I yelled to my husband right next to me, "Honey, are you scared?"

ALthough honest, his reply did not provide the inspiration for which I'd hoped. "Well, I'm getting there!" he shouted.

I laughed nervously and began to pray, pray, pray.
(Sara S)

Action Point
When the storms rage, there is only One who can comfort, only One who can provide the courage needed to withstand. Only One who can say with authority, "Peace, be still."

This One is Jesus. We need not yell, we need not panic; we need only to bow in humility and acknowledge the awesome power of our King. He alone is able to bring us through the storm to safety.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When pitching a tent, location is vital. Pick a high place without much grass. Grass grows where the water flows! Invest in a good-quality tent that has a rain shield; and be sure to position the tent so the water flows away from and not underneath it.

Today's Photograph . . . . Then Today We Fight In The Shade!!!!!  (Michael T)
Bible Study Verse
Psalms 91: 5
Fear nothing-not wild wolves in the night, not flying arrows in the day. (Message)
Thoughts
In the movie, 300, the enemy, the Persian Empire, tries to provoke fear into the outnumbered 300 by saying, "Our archers are so many, our arrows will block out the sun."
I love the response of one of the 300, with laughter he responds, "Then today we fight in the shade!"
What a manly, fear nothing attitude. I want to always have a quick fear nothing response that honors my God, a response that makes HIM bigger and provokes courage into those around me.
(Wes W)
Action Point
I can more readily relate to wolves and arrows as an outdoorsman. But God is promising so much more in this story. Not just harm from the outside, but also the inside, pestilence, disease, plague and disaster. Psalms 91:7 reminds us, "Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you," (Message). Verse 10 declares, "Evil can't get close to you, harm can't get through the door," (Message).
I'm choosing to believe God's promises and speak them out over my wife and grandchildren, even my tent. Verse 10 "Harm can't get through the door," (Message). It's just a choice. I'm making to speak faith building words of strength and encouragement.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
"Evil can't get close to you."   But, I make sure before the wind comes up that a tree isn't leaning in my direction, or heavy rain turned into a stream will divert around it. I make mental note where the horses are tied, escape routes and line of fire in case visitors come sneaking in the night. I know my surroundings before dark and any surprises.

Today's Photograph . . . . God Promises Us An Offensive Position  (NPS)
Bible Study Verses
Psalms 91: 13
You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. (NIV)

You'll walk unharmed among lions and snakes, and kick young lions and serpents from the path. (Message)

Thought
Gustavo is a Guanano Indian from the border of Colombia, South America and he catches catfish the size of boys with his bare hands, not a rod and reel. He's a true sportsmen.

One day a woman came running from their community garden shaken and scared. She said, "There's a huge snake sunning itself across the whole garden," much like a telephone pole.

Barefooted with his ax he sneaks up on the sleeping snake, careful not to let his shadow or the snap of a twig give him away. He approached stealthily and draws back his ax in a single breath, with all his strength, fully intending to dispatch the dangerous intruder to a once quiet village.

But, the ax glances off its head! Now that's a really big snake and Gustavo is mighty close. I wasn't there to see his lightening fast reflexes and get away!
(Wes W)
Action Point
Gustavo is the first native pastor for that Guanano village. When God broke into his life and healed him of alcoholism, his wife and mother-in-law were among the first converts. They had never seen a man made over by Jesus, a man who didn't beat his wife while drunk. It broke their hearts.

God is promising us an offensive position, not a run in fear defensive position. As we swing our ax we'll say, "Fear this! That's all you got? You better run home to momma," as we kick them from the path. We'll send them yelping if they stand in the path God has ordained for us.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Get a bigger ax and a much bigger wet-stone.

Today's Photograph . . . . That Christ Would Be Revealed To The World Through Each Of Us (MQ)
Bible Study Verses
Luke 24: 46- 48
He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. (NIV)

Thoughts
Yesterday morning I was out hunting with my son for the last time this year. We have a late doe season in December here in Michigan, and this season happened to coincide this year with some ridiculously cold weather.

As my son and I prepared to get ready to hunt yesterday morning, we woke up to 0 degrees Fahrenheit without wind chill. By the time we drove a half hour to our hunting property, it was a balmy 5 degrees.
As we sat there in our blinds waiting for one last opportunity to shoot a doe, we endured the cold. We sat for a couple of hours but to no avail - we saw nothing other than woodpeckers, blue jays, and squirrels.
(Dave M)

Action Point
What would cause us to go out on a frigid cold morning like this when we could have been back at the house drinking hot cocoa and enjoying the snowy view of the lake out our family room window?

Commitment. We are committed hunters; some might even say crazy or insane - and I understand where they are coming from. They just aren't committed to the cause like we are.

Well, let me ask you a question today, "How committed are you in your spiritual walk?" Because if you are truly committed to Christ, your life will reflect it. We don't get called "committed" hunters by sitting in the house - not hunting. Our actions reflect what we believe in.

Spiritually, do people around you see your faith in action? Do they know that you are committed to Christ? I'm not talking about doing things for a show, and I'm not talking about trying to earn your salvation. I'm simply wondering if the world around you sees Christ in you.

As we kick off a new year, may this be our prayer - that Christ would be revealed to the world that we encounter through us. May we be His hands and His feet to a suffering world around us.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you are going to hunt in extreme cold, layer up - layer up - layer up. Make sure your head is covered, as most body heat is lost through the head.
